The N.A.A.C.P. Held its annual awards banquet Saturday evening October 24, 2009 at the Truman Arnold Center at Texarkana College in Texarkana, Texas. The gala event consisted of the “Meet and Greet” occasion a prelude to an extraordinary evening of wonderful cuisine, enchanting music, and the presentations of awards of excellence to six recipients in various categories .The banquet hall was bursting with gaiety, decked in exquisite adornments and the people were dressed to the nines in their finery. The community came out in record numbers offering support and to celebrate the 100th Anniversary of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People and the 90th Anniversary of the Greater Texarkana Branch.

The N.A. A.C.P. is the oldest and largest civil rights organization whose mission is to ensure the political, education, social, and economic equality of the rights of all persons and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. More than any other organization in the nation’s history, the N.A.A.C.P.has worked to change this country for the betterment of people of color, women, and the disenfranchised. In addition, the work of this great organization has expanded access to equal opportunities and social justice. Starting when the black citizens were denied the right to cast a vote, to voting in the 2008 historic Presidential Election; a big victory was apparent when voting in the 2008 historic Presidential Election; a big victory ws apparent when an American of African descent became president of the United States of America” . (Melva Flower, Banquet Chairperson)
As I mentioned before the night was extraordinary, there was a heartfelt video from President Barrack Obama congratulating the N.A. A.C.P. on their landmark contribution of hard work and diligent service to the betterment of humanity to mankind; the brilliant dialogue of 11 year old honor student Caleb Washington who aspires to become a neurosurgeon. Young Mister Washington spoke eloquently of the dedication and tenacity he understood would be required to transform his “bold dreams into big victories”. What this reporter felt was most enthralling was Washington’s declaration of faith rooted from Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things thru Christ who strengthens me”…And so the evening transpired into an evening not only of gaiety and celebration of the honorees accomplishments but to one of humble and exalting praise to God .

From speaker to speaker the flow of testimonial praise of God’s goodness was given. From the Master of Ceremony Texarkana , Texas City Councilman Derrick Mc Gary to the Reverend Madison Brown who officiated as spiritual overseer of the ceremony and the honorable mayor of Texarkana ,Texas Steve Mayo who proclaimed Saturday October 24, 2009 as “Sylvester Turner Day” .
"But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will soar on wings like eagles, they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." (Isaiah 40:31)

The honorable Texas State Representative Stephen Frost introduced the keynote speaker of the evening, the honorable Texas State Representative Sylvester Turner. Turner encouraged young Caleb Washington to never stop having bold dreams in which he spoke of his own personal journey towards becoming a Texas State Representative. Turner who was reared in Acres Homes also reflected on his faith in God, and his life lessons given to him by his father and mother. State Representative Turner lectured on his metaphoric analogy of “a small boat sailing with the big ships” in which he compared his bold dreams in striving for new victories in the political arena. As I listened to State Representative Turner speak I thought of how greatness is birthed out of bold dreams, nurtured by wise instructions and prime examples but only truly manifested when one humbly submits to God and has a genuine love of people . I thought of the first day I began working for Texarkana Community Journal, of the words of Pastor Paul Keener when he gave me his vision, his metaphoric analogy of his bold dream. Pastor Keener said he saw himself as “a limousine driver and Texarkana Community Journal was the limousine (the vehicle) to help carry people from one place to another to reach their dreams”.
As I sat at the table with complete strangers* a bond of friendship and kinship began to grow. The speakers’ generational praise reports and personal testimonies united us as one; it was our own generational stories being retold. There were different names, different situations but the same struggles, hopes, dreams and the same God’s promises, deliverance and victories. *Lou and Richard Murphy, Jackie Clay, Jean H. Matlock, Joyce Matlock Porter, and I had shared “A Holy Scripture Night of Praise”. As I looked about the banquet hall I saw that rapport was contagious and there was an overwhelming joy of we the whole community were celebrating where our forefathers had been , where we had come and where our younger generations could , would, can, and will go . We had witnessed, testified and celebrated as a whole “Bold Dreams …Big Victories”

The elect lady, bearing her divine commission in her looks, not only had a countenance radiating an inner peace as one in Christ, but also a sweet influence upon those around . Her children, following her faith, walked in truth, and because of pious witness and their godly conversation, were praised by John for their walk in love, walk circumspectly and worthily of their vocation. The Apostle knew the correct Christian walk and witness by their adherence to the Word of God by their daily conduct. They only believed in truth and walked in it.
Langston Hughes’s Mother to Son Legacy “A Declaration of Independence”
– By Sandra Dukes
The acclaimed poet Langston Hughes was accredited for his artistic contributions in helping to construct the “Harlem Renaissance” of the 1920s and was often called the ‘Architect’
of the early Harlem Renaissance. Hughes’s characteristic style of writing was from a realism point of view. Along with Zora Neale Hurston he felt it was important to write stories that were a reflection of African-Americans true lifestyles and culture. There were complexities in having such convictions. Hughes, felt to be true to his works, he could not idealize his people, for the sake of social and political movements. Hughes considered himself a realist and modernist and wrote of the African – American urbanites in the poetry forms of stanzas built upon a platform, of the musical rhythm of jazz and the blues, everyday speech and liberty for all people (The Norton Anthology of American Literature 1914-1945(1891-1892)).
Hughes’s poem “Mother to Son” is a testimony of what life had been for her and her race and class of people, it is a metaphoric guideline of surviving and succeeding in a life, which was demanding on the mind, body and spirit. It is a mother’s ‘legacy to her son. Her own ‘Declaration of Independence’. The speaker in this poem, the mother, is preparing her son for life and its difficulties and its rewards. “Mother to Son” is a ballad; this prose poetry exudes with satire which creates the mood and tone of forewarning against the casualties of life and the rewards of fortitude.
Mother to Son
Well, son I’ll tell you
Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair
It’s had tacks in it’
And splinters,
And boards torn up,
And places with no carpet on the floor
Bare. (Lines 1-7)
To quote Aristotle “the greatest thing by far is to be a master of metaphor”. Hughes epitomizes ‘the mastery of metaphor’, in his use of the words ‘crystal stair’ to represent ‘the mother’s journey in life’. Hughes uses the extremism of the word ‘crystal ‘to the antagonism of the mother’s attitude towards life. The life lesson she counsels to her son is enhanced by the diction of her speech. One is given possibly a better profile into ‘the mother’s background, by the manner in which she speaks. In the 1920’s when southern rural blacks migrated to the north in search of a better life, those with lesser education and skills, were sometimes employed as domestic maids. The “crystal stair”, then could symbolize an effortless life versus a life of hardship “with no tacks, splinters and boards torn-up”, representing the rebuking of discrimination of the social classes and servitude. The mother recounts to the son of her adversities through life and how she overcame them:
“But all the time
I been a-climbin’ on,
And reaching’ landin’s,
And sometimes goin’ in the dark
Where there ain’t been no light. (Lines 8-12)
The mother counsels her son, by encouraging him to believe in himself and attain in life, what it has to offer:
So boy, don’t you turn back.
Don’t you set down on the steps
‘Cause you finds it’s kinder hard.
Don’t you fall now-
For I’se still going’, honey,
I’se still climbing’,
And life for me ain’t been no crystal stair. (Lines13-20)

“The Poet Laureate of Harlem”, Langston Hughes, conveyed the heart-beat of Harlem and the ’New Negro’. Hughes’s “Mother to Son “is a mother’s gift of teaching her child that in an unjust society one must ‘declare his own independence’.
Freedom of creative expression, whether personal or collective, is one of the many legacies of Langston Hughes, who has been called “the architect” of the black poetic tradition. He is one of the world’s most universally beloved poets, read by children and teachers, scholars and poets, musicians and historians. That “freedom of creative expression” lives and flourishes, and is honored in the African American writers of today. Their voices are now for a whole America, with a tone that sings out to embrace our heritage as a complete America in efforts to become “architects” of a better America. In their pledge to allegiance these writers speak to the problems that address our families, communities, and our country and yes even our churches.
One such writer declaring his independence is Dr. Joseph B. Howard, Apostle, teacher, author and creator of Phoenix of Grace Writers Society and radio host of Phoenix of Grace Word in the Desert. In Dr. Howard’s new book “Battered Clergy” From Victim to Victor by W.S. Polk, Jr. he confronts the problems of domestic abuse not often or easily spoken of, in which a minister, a man suffers from verbal, emotional and physical abuse from his wife, in this book the minister finally re-claims freedom through his dedication to God and his ministry. There is an epidemic that has seized our nation for far too long. Its symptoms are exhibited in the form of raised ferocious fists, brutal kicks, and cruel threatening words. The plague of domestic violence is cloaked within vindictive and malicious emotional and physical mistreatment, resulting in the death of not only the body but also the spirit and the soul! These acts of violent behavior are strangling our people of its integrity and divine purpose. We are birthing generation upon generation of a populace delivered from ‘Wounded Wombs’. One might ask themselves “what can I do, why would anyone subject themselves to such treatment”? The answer to this question should be approached like any other. First we must recognize and admit there is a problem, explore the cause with research and education to seek a solution and then and only then can the healing begin. Again you may ask yourself if this infliction does not touch your life “why should I bear the duty, assume the responsibility”? Throughout history when we as a people have ignored the injustices of others it has had tragic effects on us as a whole. These atrocities which have spanned time from the “trail of tears”, the robbing of Africa of its sons and daughters and imprisoning them into slavery, the Japanese American internment, to the hate crimes of today which has scarred our nation. I contend that “yes we are our brothers’ and our sisters’ keeper”, I also contend that the atrocities fore- mentioned are no more or no less than the scourge of abuse that plagues and threatens to destroy our children and our women. If we approach this dilemma from a spiritual perspective all that is required is to read and meditate on these words in the bible;
And the Lord said unto Cain, Where is Abel thy brother? And he said, I know not: Am I my brother's keeper?
And he [God] said, what hast thou done? The voice of thy brother's blood crieth unto me from the ground.-- Genesis 4: 9-10 (KJV)
The blood of our brother is now our sister’s and it is still crying out to be heard! We must band together and be a voice of rescue and active reform. We should have a sense of duty not only because it is beneficial to our well- being, we should reach out because it is decent, moral and loving. We must become the remedy that will cure this disease that has infested our families, community and nation. Dr. Sandy Murphy is her sisters’ keeper.
