Talking, Thinking and Reasoning…Childlike or Childish?

“When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.” (1 Corinthians 13:11)

In the Scripture Paul talks about how “tongues,” “prophecy,” and “knowledge” will all pass away. The full revelation of Scripture will be completed and “that which is perfect will come.” Like children we are immature in the knowledge of Christ; “For we know in part, and we prophecy in part.” Therefore, “For now we see through a glass, darkly…” As we grow in Christ our talking, thinking and reasoning should also grow. Not that we will gain perfection, but rather a gradual obsolescence of certain behaviors and attitudes of maturity should occur.

As we mature in Christ this change should affect every aspect of our daily walk with Christ. It should show in what we say, think and reason. The Christian should strive to attain unto maturity until he/she eventually outgrows the need for certain things associated with immaturity, to grow up in accord with the gifts Christ has given. Continually praying on those weaknesses not yet brought under control by the Holy Spirit.

To be Above the Crowd as a mature Christian, and to be respected as such; your conversation, thought process and reasoning must be mature. Have you learned to communicate the gift (s) God has given you? Many adults are in the capacity as leader, teacher and other roles, but are still children in their gifts. They speak as children, understand as children, and act as children. They are in these capacities because they are eager as children to attain them. But they are like selfish children! Too often Christians are childish in their desires for greatness of position and status in the church, and lose of perspective having a childlike behavior; which is humility.

You can’t (just) want to lead, teach, sing, preach, etc.; you must be obedient and wait on the Lord. One must follow the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Therefore, while you learn to talk, as you learn to think, and as you learn to reason; “Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that need not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).

To study means to “give diligence and be zealous.” When you are motivated by zeal, you give earnest and persistent application to the study of God’s Word. Not only will you present yourself before men and women unashamed, you will also present yourself before God “a workman that need not be ashamed…”
