Because thou has made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation. There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For He shall give His angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways (Psalms 91:9-11 ).
One of the functions of angels is to watch over believers ( Hebrews 1:14 ). There are examples of guardian angels in Scripture ( 1 Kings 19:5; Daniel 6:22; Mathew 18:10; Luke 16:22; Acts 12:7 ), although there is no indication that one is assigned to each believer. Angels can also be God's messengers Mathews 2:13; Actsa 27:23, 24 ). Angels are not visible, except on special occassions ( Numbers 22:31; Luke 2:9 ). It is comforting to know that God watches over us in times of great stress and fear.

I have written unto you, fathers, because ye have known Him that is from the beginning. I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the Word of God abideth in you, and you have overcome the wicked one (1 John 2:14 ).

THE PRIMARY MEANS through which we are kept and preserved is through obedience to His Word. In the submission of our will to God, our souls find protection from evil. Consider the apostle John's words to the young men of the first cetury church. I have written to you young men, because you are strong, and the Word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one (1John 2:14 ).
Abiding in the Word of God brought spiritual strength to young men in John's day, enabling them to overcome the evil one. Is not this the reason why so many of us are defeated by the devil - we do not abide in the Word?
Christ's teaching guides us into the presence of the Father; it is the Father's presence that both empowers and protects us.( My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, and neither shall any man pluck them out of My hand. My Father which gave them Me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of My Fater's hand ( John 10:27-29 ). Just as the shepherd protects his sheep, Jesus protects His people from eternal harm. While believers can expect to suffer on earth, Satan cannot harm their souls or take away their etenal life with God. There are many reason to be afraid here on earth because this is Satan's domain. But you choose to follow Jesus, He will give you everlasting safety.
No one is stronger than our heavenly Father. As we follow Christ, He positions us in the palm of God's hand. There death cannot seize us. Whatever battles we face, we never face them alone. There is none like our God. The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms; and He shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them ( Dueteronomy 33:27 ). Moses's song declares that God is our refuge , our only true security. How often we entrust to other things - perhaps money, career, a noble cause, or a life long dream. But our only true refuge is the eternal God, who always holds out His arm to catch us when the shaky supports we trust in to catch us collapse and we fall. No storm can destroy us when we take refuge in Him. Those without God, however, must forever be cautious. One mistake can wipe them out. Living your life for God in this world may seerm like risky business. But it is the Godless on shaky ground. Because God is our refuge, we can dare to be bold.
Who is made, not after the law of a carnal commandment, but after the power of a endless life ( Hebrewqs 7:16 ). Underneath our every step are God's everlasting arms. Thus when we pass through spiritual conflicts and trials, we are walking on eternal ground, continually kept by the power of Christ's indestructible life.
Even when we pass through the shadow of death itself, the powers of death cannot hold us. They are kept at bay by His command. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakeness, or peril of sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord ( Romans 8:35-39 ). These verses contain one of the most comforting promises in all Scripture. Believers have always had to face hardships in many forms: persecutions, illness, imprisonment, even death. These could cause them to fear that they had been abandoned by Christ. But it is impossible to be separated from Christ. His death for us is proof of His unconquerable love. Nothing can stop His constant presence with us. God tells us how great His love is so we will feel totally secure in Him. If we believe these overwhelming assurances, we will not be afraid. Principalities and powers are Satan and his fallen angels ( Ephesians 6:12 ). In Christ we are super conquerors, and His love will protect us from any such force. This passage reaffirms God's profound love for His people. No matter what happens to us , or where we are, we can never be lost to His love. When suffering comes, it should not drive us away from God, but help us identify with Him further and allow His love to reach us and heal us.
