"Use It or Lose It"

"TAKE THEREFORE THE TALENT (of gold) FROM HIM, AND GIVE IT UNTO HIM WHICH HATH TEN TALENTS". Jesus, Matthew 25:28 KJV (Capitals are mine for emphasis)

FEELING THAT THE FIRST WORKER WAS THE MOST RESPONSIBLE, HE ENTRUSTED HIM WITH FIVE TALENTS OF GOLD

Jesus told a story of a businessman who was going on a trip, and was to be gone for a long while. Calling three of his employees together before his departure, he distributed money among them, but not in the same denomination. Feeling that the first worker was the most responsible, he entrusted him with five talents of gold. The second man was given two talents, and the last one only a single talent.

IF HE HAD BEEN A SOCIALIST, HE WOULD HAVE SAID THAT ALL THE WORKERS SHOULD RECEIVE THE SAME AMOUNT, AND NOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR HOW THEY USED THE MONEY

Not shying away from teaching about the proper use of money, Jesus showed us that He was not a socialist, but a capitalist. If He had been a socialist, he would have said that all the workers should receive the same amount, and not be held accountable for how they used the money. After accomplishing his mission, he returned home. One of the first matters of business was to see how the three employees had invested their gold.

BOTH OF THEM WERE COMMENDED AND CONGRATULATED FOR THEIR BUSINESS ACUMEN

Upon investigation, the businessman discovered that the first person who had received the five talents of gold had wisely invested it, and had doubled his money, now in possession of 10 talents. The same was true of the second man, who also had increased his original amount of two talents to four. Both of them were commended and congratulated for their business acumen. Thus, they were in line for a promotion.

JESUS TAUGHT THAT THOSE WHO USE THEIR MONEY RESPONSIBLY SHOULD BE REWARDED, AND NOT PENALIZED FOR BEING SUCCESSFUL

What did the last employee do with his one talent? Feeling intimidated, because he had less than the others, in fear, he buried his money in the ground, and did nothing with it. What did the boss do? He fired the man right on the spot, taking from him the one talent, and giving it to the first employee who started out with five bars of gold and doubled his entrustment to ten. Now he had eleven in his possession. Jesus taught that those who use their money responsibly should be rewarded, and not penalized for being successful.

JESUS ENCOURAGED A HEALTHY VIEW OF MONEY, AND SAFE INVESTMENTS WHICH BRING A GOOD RETURN

Our Lord encourages good business. If He had been a socialist, He would have taken the bonuses earned by the first two, and given the excess to the man who did nothing with his money. If He had leftist leanings, He would have taken from those who have, and given it to those who had nothing, redistributing the wealth. But, this was not the case. Jesus encouraged a healthy view of money, and safe investments which bring a good return.

WHETHER IT BE GREAT OR SMALL, HE EXPECTS YOU TO USE IT WISELY

What has the Lord entrusted into your care? Whether it be great or small, He expects you to use it wisely. If you do not use it, you will eventually lose it. If you abuse it by throwing it away on bad investments, you will also lose it, "going in the hole", winding up with less than that with which you started. God wants to become involved in your finances, and teach you responsibility. Poverty is not a virtue.

HE IS NOW ENDEAVORING TO TEACH US TO BE "WISE MANAGERS" OF WHAT HE HAS PLACED IN OUR HANDS

We are to help the poor, but if we do not make money, then we will have nothing to give to the needy. If we expect to "rule and reign with Jesus" in His kingdom on Earth, then we need to gain some practical experience in the here and now. He is now endeavoring to teach us to be "wise managers" of what He has placed in our hands. Otherwise, it is doubtful that He will employ those who are losers and inexperienced. This is "our proving ground" to determine our usefulness in the future. Promotions are in store for those who pass the test
