Wal-Mart customers who picked up lipstick off the shelf at a Broken-Arrow, Okla., store were part of a little-mentioned experiment earlier this year that tracked consumer habits using Radio Frequency Identification technology, or RFID.
Proctor & Gamble teamed with the retail giant in the test over a four month-period which allowed researchers to view the Wal-Mart shelves from company headquarters some 750 miles away in Cincinnati, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.
Also, the Max Factor Lipfinity lipstick had RFID tags hidden inside that allowed the inventory to be tracked leaving the shelves.
The Chicago paper said it was informed of the study by a disgruntled P&G employee.
Wal-Mart first denied the test, but then admitted it had allowed customers to be watched.
A P&G spokeswoman said a sign at the Lipfinity display "alerted customers that closed-circuit televisions and electronic merchandise security systems are in place in the store," the Sun-Times reported.
She insisted the system could only track lipstick leaving the shelves. Once the product was taken away, it would be out of range.
A privacy rights group, however, has called for mandatory labeling of the products with RFID chips.
"On the surface, the Broken Arrow trial may seem harmless," Katherine Albrecht, founder and director of Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and Numbering, or CASPIAN, told the Sun-Times. "But the truth is that the businesses involved pushed forward with this technology in secret, knowing full well that consumers are overwhelmingly opposed to it."
As WorldNetDaily reported, Gillette, the nation's largest shaving-products manufacturer, planned to conduct a trial of RFID last summer at a Brockton, Mass., Wal-Mart store.
The plan called for Gillette to embed a tiny microchip in each of its products so store managers could track Gillette store stock and alert them if products were running low. Eventually, say critics, the technology could be used to literally track products from store shelves to homes.
However, according to the Washington Times, Wal-Mart abandoned its "smart shelf" experiment for the time being. Instead, the paper said, the retailer would incorporate RFID technology at each of its 103 distribution centers around the country to monitor inventory.
The decision, said the Times, came after Albrecht and CASPIAN called for a letter-writing campaign against Wal-Mart. But retailer spokesman Tom Williams denied that was the motivation for Wal-Mart changing its "smart shelf" plans.
"We didn't cancel anything. We just didn't follow through with this particular idea," he told the paper.
But the Times report said other large retailers, such as Target and Home Depot, were testing the RFID technology to monitor inventory in their storerooms and distribution centers.
Wal-Mart and the U.S. Department of Defense have been the biggest boosters of the technology.

I have spoken to many Christians, Some do not believe that the microchip Implant is the Mark of the beast.. Yet, this world in it's financial crisis is looking a for a way out.. It seems people are slowly being conditioned that the Microchip Implant is the answer to a lot of problems and yes, so it seems. But what bothers me is that those who do not surrender their allegiance to this new way of world order, will be considered common criminals and put in Jail. In the last few days, I have wondered about Hitler and those who were deceived by the unholy spirit of the Antichrist and had become as evil and wicked as Satan himself. They filed the ranks of Hitler's (Lucifer's) Army and as Hitler and those under Him had a common bond and goal. They had a world agenda. They had the power but not world power. The Word of God says, the Antichrist shall be given the power of 10 superpower Nations to bring the world under his supremacy and dictatorship, causing ALL both rich and poor, bond and free to receive a Mark of ownership in order to buy or sell. Now I believe if you are in doubt to whether or not the Microchip Implant is the Mark of the beast, you should search both the Greek Holy Scriptures as well as informative websites and come to know that it is, and you need to proclaim it in the ministry to the lost. Millions upon millions of people are going to receive it..Millions upon millions will be forever lost and will lose their very souls to a devil's hell. What is our duty to do? Win those who are chosen of God and prepare then for the coming Kingdom of Christ upon this earth.. Have you ever spoken in tongues or prophesied? Have you ever witnessed and prayed for a sinner to know Jesus? Have you ever commanded demons to leave a person? Have you ever laid you hands on someone to be healed of a sickness or disease? Have you ever laid hands on a believer for them to be baptized in the power of God's Holy Spirit? If you have not, then, You need to get under the anointed teaching of the Word of God and do so.. We are living in perilous times as Jesus said these things would happen. But understand that the persecute Churches over in China, Japan, Moscow and anywhere the Gospel is having to go underground, They are experiencing major mighty moves of God, by the power of His Holy Spirit..Why there and not here? They believe.. Many Denominational Churches here in America are off in their little comfort zones. They have no power, they do not know what it means to fast and pray.. You mention anything about fasting and they plainly tell you, it's not for them. I remind you that Jesus spoke of a parable about 10 Virgins..Five were wise and five were foolish. The foolish had no oil in their lamps. Which represented the power of the Holy Spirit. You want to know what this power is? Read Isaiah 61:1-3.. If you can claim those passages for your own personal walk with God, then you have Oil (Holy Spirit) in your lamp (Life) and you will be doing just that.. Beloved, as the days grow darker, God is going to send one last great revival across the United States and He is going to bring in those who are the anointed of God but they will consist of those who are set free from demons, those delivered from sickness and disease, and those who are poor, lonely, destitute..Are you in the area of your own walk with Christ to be used for the glory of God? Now is the time to be taught, be trained, be equipped, be empowered by the Holy Spirit and know that you are in right relationship with the Lord. Sin must not be a factor in your life. You must not have any secret sins. You must not give place to the devil at all. This is why we need Jesus.. We need the power of His Spirit, there can not be anything holding us back. There will be many pew warmers of the Church, left to face the coming Antichrist and yes, they will be given the choice, either the mark or death. It will be a choice that could have been prevented if they would have listened to Jesus by the power of the Holy Spirit. That it why it does matter where the sheep are being fed. Why be fed baloney when you can feast on the fruits and gifts of the Spirit of God? Know this..Once a person receives the Mark of the Antichrist in order to buy or sell, it is too late for that person. That is why we need to warn them now.. Blessings..
