PLEASE PASS THIS SCAM ALERT ON About the Economic Stimulus Payments
Here’s how it works.
You may receive an email saying the government is sending out the “economic stimulus” payment checks early.
Fantastic! Or is it? Many folks won’t receive their check and will actually end up loosing lots of their hard earned cash.
Not you. You are going to be prepared.
Scammers contact households by telephone claiming to represent the IRS. They explain that the IRS will direct-deposit the economic stimulus payment checks right away. The issue is timing. Because there are millions of folks to call, the “target” will only be called once. During this one call the “target” person must confirm the bank account number into which the IRS will deposit the check.
Does this sound familiar? It should.
What happens, naturally, is that the scammer will use the account number to clean out the account and steal the “target’s” identity.
The best defense is a strong offense. You must be fore-armed and pass this info along.
The IRS has said they “will not be calling them and will not be e-mailing them about the economic stimulus package” according Michelle Lamishaw and IRS spokes-woman.
Under the law signed back in February, the IRS will send checks to those who filed a 1040 or 1040A tax return for 2007. This means that checks will go out to about 130 million households, including about 20 million low-income older Americans and some 250,000 disabled veterans.
For information from the real IRS, you can go to www.irs.gov or call 1-800-829-1040. If you are the subject to an attempted SCAM, file a complaint with the IRS or your state Attorney General’s Office.
