THE BLOOD

"For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to
you upon the alter to make atonement for your souls; for it is the
blood that makes atonement for the soul."
Leviticus 17:10

Atone
Occurring 150 times, kaphar, has traditionally been thought to be
related to an Arabic word for cover. The view that Old Testament
sacrifices covered over sins until the Messiah came and actually did
away with them is today considered unlikely by some scholars. R.
Laird Harris takes the verb to be derived from the noun kopher and
to mean "provide a ransom"(Theological Wordbook of the Old
Testament, I:453)

Atonement

Now the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt,
saying, "This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be
the first month of the year to you. Speak to all the congregation
of Israel, saying:' On the tenth day of this month every man shall
take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his father, a
lamb for a household.
Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year. You
may take it from the sheep or from the goats. Now you shall keep it
until the fourteenth day of the same month. Then the whole assembly
of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight. And they
shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on
the lintel of the houses where they eat it. Then they shall eat the
flesh on that night; roasted in fire, with unleavened bread and with
bitter herbs they shall eat it.
And thus you shall eat it: with a belt on your waist, your sandals
on your feet, and your staff in your hand. So you shall eat it in
haste. It is the Lord's Passover. For I will pass through the land
of Egypt, both man and beast; and against all the gods of Egypt I
will execute judgment: I am the Lord. Now the blood shall be a sign
for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I
will pass over you; and the plague shall not be on you to destroy
you when I strike the land of Egypt."
Exodus 12:1-3,5-8,10-13

Atonement (kippur, kippurim) is the word in the expression "Day of
Atonement." In the Old Testament the plural form is used, rather
than the current Yom Kippur. The day commemorates redemption by
blood and power: the blood of the lamb on the doorposts was a
ransom, and it protected the Israelites from destruction. Passing
through the Red Sea on dry land illustrates redemption by power.

ATONEMENT/SACRIFICE

"Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we
esteemed Him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was
wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we
are healed."
Isaiah 53:4,5

New Covenant Sacrifice
Therefore not even the first covenant was dedicated without blood.
For when Moses had spoken every precept to all the people according
to the law, he took the blood of calves and goats, with water,
scarlet wool, and hyssop, and sprinkled both the book itself and all
the people, saying, "This is the blood of the covenant which God has
commanded you." Then likewise he sprinkled with blood both the
tabernacle and all the vessels of the ministry. And according to
the law almost all things are purged with blood, and without
shedding of blood there is no remission."
Hebrews 9:18-22

Day of Atonement
This day was marked by fasting, humiliation, and great reverence
(Leviticus 16). On this day, the high priest first made atonement
for his own sin, then entered the most holy area of the tabernacle
to make an appropriate animal sacrifice to atone for the sins of all
the people.

Atonement, Expiation, Ransom Price
(kopher)
The word kopher is used to teach redemption by substitution. The
worshiper put his hands on the head of the sacrifice, and as he
confessed his sins they were transferred to the innocent animal.
Generally the word kopher is used in the sense of removing sin or
defilement. It clearly parallels the new Testament doctrine that
Christ, the lamb of God, an innocent- and infinite-sacrifice, bore
the sins of those guilty sinners who identify with him by faith.

"knowing that you were not redeemed with corruptible things, like
silver or gold, from your aimless conduct received by tradition from
your fathers, but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb
without blemish and without spot.
He indeed was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but
was manifest in these last times for you who through Him believe in
God, who raised him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that you
faith and hope are in God.
I; Peter 1:18-21

"And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it and broke it,
and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is My
body." Then he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them
saying, "Drink from it, all of you. For this is My blood of the new
covenant, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.
Matthew 26:26-28

In New Testament times, the people gathered in Jerusalem for the
annual celebration of Passover. Jesus was crucified in the city
during a Passover observance. The blood of the lamb that had saved
the Hebrew people from destruction in Egypt had looked forward to
this perfect, eternal sacrifice Jesus made for all believers. The
words with which John the Baptist greeted Jesus, portray this
sacrificial dimension of His life and ministry.

"Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!
John 1:29
