The Wonders of Charity

by Bayo Omoyiola, Jr

And now abide Faith, Hope, Love, these three; but the greatest of these is Love.
– 1 Cor. 13:13

(For meditation: 1 Cor. 13: 1-13, 1 Kings 3:1-14, Acts 9:36-41)

There is no virtue in heaven, on earth or under the earth that surpasses Love. Charity is the greatest. It surpasses all. Love passes all knowledge. It is wonderful. It makes the kings of the earth and the angels of glory to marvel. Love touches all men in a special way.

The Virtue

Love is the best and most excellent virtue. It is miraculous. It is above all. Perfect Love casts out fear. It conquers all things. Love never fails. It suffers long. It is kind. It makes a nobody somebody. Isn’t that amazing? It is pure. It is not proud. Love believes all things. The fullness of God’s power and glory is accessible by Love. In it dwells the fullness of God’s grace and mercy. Love is the way of truth. It is the way of life. It is the road that leads to perfection. It is the key to everything. Isn’t that wonderful?

The Expression & reward

Love expresses itself in giving. Love is selfless. It thinks about others. Love gives to the poor. Our Lord Jesus Christ is the physical manifestation of Love. He is Love personified and he really showed us how to love. He also showed us the greatest kind of love by dying for us. He loved others more than himself and was greatly rewarded. Jesus also taught us another kind of Love. He said – Love your neighbor as yourself. If you love yourself, then you should love your neighbor. What you do for yourself, do to others. He also said – Give and it shall be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over shall men give unto you. If you claim to love people and you don’t give to them, then you don’t love them. If you can't love the people you see, then you can't love God that you do not see. If you give with love, you will be rewarded. Not all people give with a heart of Love. Such people are nothing and would get no reward for their giving even if they give their bodies to be burned. Genuine Love is always connected to God. You must love God with all your heart and show it by loving the people that you meet day by day.

What you do unto others, people will do unto you. Love is reciprocal. It may not be the same set of people that you bless that will bless you in return but God will send people to bless you. For whatever a man sows, he will reap. Seed-time and harvest does no cease. Glory to God! God is real and his principles never change. Isn’t that wonderful? God never forgets the labor of your love. His eyes are ever running to and fro the earth looking for men with hearts of charity that he may reward. God responds to actions of faith done in Love. He will always reward such actions.

The Wonders

Love is wonderful. It multiplies. Solomon gave an extra-ordinary offering. He gave a thousand burnt offerings unto the LORD and attracted heaven’s attention. God had to come down from heaven to bless him. He gave him an open cheque. Solomon asked for a wise & understanding heart. God did not only grant his request but also gave him all the things he would need and much more. That’s what happens to you when your heart is connected to him. He will give you all the things you need even before you ask for them and even give you much more. Before you ask, he would provide. While you are yet speaking, your request would have already been granted. Isn’t that wonderful?

In the early church, a saint called Dorcas who was also called Tabitha was known for charity. She loved God with all of her heart. She was full of good works and had a good report. There was a time she became sick and died but because of her good works of charity, God healed her and raised her back to life. What a wonder!

At the end of the world, every born-again christian who has lived a life of charity would be rewarded. They will all be raised unto eternal life. King Jesus would say unto them – Come, you blessed of my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world: I was hungry and you gave me food. I was thirsty and you gave me drink. I was a stranger and you took me in. I was naked and you clothed me. I was sick, and you visited me. I was in prison and you came to me … (Matt 25:34-40). Isn’t that wonderful? Therefore, my brethren – owe no man nothing but love and you will surely be rewarded. Selah
