Recall that John the Baptist introduced Jesus as the Baptizer in the Holy Spirit. It was his distinctive introduction to Israel. Second, the Holy Spirit was the sourse of power for the whole ministry and teaching of Jesus; Jesus depended totally on the Holy Spirit. Third, Jesus promised His disciples that when He himself went back to heaven, He would send the Holy Spirit in His place as a Personal representative to be their paraclete or Counselor, comforter, helper- "the one called alongside to help them." We now want to consider the fulfillment of this promise that Jesus made. In particular, we will examine the wonderful new thing that happened when the Holy Spirit descended on the day of Pentecost. As with many of the promises of the Holy Spirit was not completely realized in a single event; rather, it was fulfilled in phases. The first phase was what we call Easter Sunday..I know this offends some of you but I am not preferring to the Pagan holiday or even the word Easter for all that matters, so bare with me. We are talking here about the day Jesus was resurrected..
John 20:19-22 reads On the evening of that first day of the week, the disciples were together. They had locked the doors because they were afraid of the Jews. Jesus came in and stood among them. He said, "May peace be with you!" Then he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples were very happy when they saw the Lord. Again Jesus said, "May peace be with you! The Father has sent me. So now I am sending you." He then breathed on them. He said, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
The twenty second verse makes an important statement. The Greek word for Spirit, pneuma, also means "breath" or "wind". This act of breathing on them was related to the words Jesus spoke, "he breathed on them and said, "Receive the Holy breath' (Holy Spirit, the breath of God.) I believe this was one of the most critical and decisive phases in the entire working out of God's purpose of redemption. First, at that moment, those first disciples entered into what we would call New Testament salvation. In Romans 10: 9, Paul laid down the basic requirements for salvation..Romans 10:9 if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord." Believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead. Then you will be saved.
John 20:19-22 was the first moment at which the disciples really believed God raised Jesus from the dead. Up to that time, they could not enter into salvation as it is presented in the New Testament. At that moment, when they confessed Jesus as their Lord and believed God had raised Him from the dead, they were saved with New Testament salvation. The second thing that took place was that the disciples were regenerated, or born again. They became new creations. Each passed out of the old creation into the new creation through the inbreathed breath of God. To understand this, we must look back at the description of the original creation of man in Genesis 2:7 Then the Lord God formed a man. He made him out of the dust of the ground. He breathed the breath of life into him. And the man became a living person. The first creation of man took place as God breathed the Spirit of Life (the Breath of Life or the Holy Spirit) into that figure of clay that was on the ground. the inbreathed breath of God, the Holy Spirit, transformed that figure of clay into a living soul. The passage in John, however, speakes of the new creation described by Paul in 2 Cor. 5:17, If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. There is a direct parallel between the first creation and the new creation..In the new creation, Jesus is the resurrected Lord and Savior who has conquered sin, death, hell, and Satan. Having done this, He appeared to His disciples and breathed into them the breath of resurrection life. This was a new kind of life, one that had triumped over all the forces of evil, death, and sin. Through that experience, the disciples passed out of the old order and entered into the new creation in Christ, through the resurrection breath of life received from Jesus.. However, it is important to understand that even after this Easter Sunday experience, the total fulfillment of the promise of the Holy Spirit had not yet come. After the resurrection Jesus said to the disciples in Luke 24: 49 "I am going to send you what my Father has promised. But for now, stay in the city. Stay there until you have received power from heaven."Even more explicitly, shortly before His ascension into heaven and nearly forty days after resurrection Sunday, Jesus said to them, Acts 1:5 John baptized with water. But in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit." The final complete fulfillment took took place on the day of Pentecost.. Acts 2:1-4 The day of Pentecost came. The believers all gathered in one place. Suddenly a sound came from heaven. It was like a strong wind blowing. It filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw something that looked like tongues of fire. The flames separated and settled on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. They began to speak in languages they had not known before. The Spirit gave them the ability to do this. Pentecost was the actual manifestation and fulfillment of the promise. The Holy Spirit descended from heaven, in person, in the form of a mighty wind, filled each one of them individually, and gave supernatural utterance in a language they had never learned and the Holy Spirit is here to do the same unto everyone who has given their life to Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior. God said on the day of Pentecost, "'In the last days, God says,
I will pour out my Holy Spirit on all people.
Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your young men will see visions.
Your old men will have dreams.
In those days I will pour out my Spirit
even on those who serve me, both men and women.
Jesus was not merely, resurrected, but he was also exalted and glorified. The promise couldn't have been fulfilled until Jesus had been glorified. So now we have received the word of God to proclaim to the nations of the world that Satan has been defeated and Now people can be set free from sin, sickness, poverty, physical and spiritual death! They can be reborn as a new creation in Christ, and baptized in the power and anointing of his Spirit to do the very works of Christ on this earth destroying the works and deceptions of the devil and to prepare believers as kings and priests unto the coming Kingdom of Jesus for 1000 years... Let us do as Jesus taught to teach, to preach, and to heal those who are called.....Blessings..
