Matthew8:23-27, Mark 4:36-41, Luke 8:22-25

NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP

Have you ever witnessed an accident with a group of people?
Or any kind of incident where you were questioned about what you saw?
Did everyone report the same thing?

There is a well known story in the gospel record about Jesus crossing the Galilee with his
disciples.
I for one, am astounded at the power in this periscope that is only four to five verses in Matthew, Mark and Luke.
For me it has power.
I hope when you read them together as I have the Holy Spirit will touch you as it has me.
You are familiar with this story, it even had a song created out of it based on the words from
The gospel of Mark, the song is Peace, Be Still.
This story was told by the disciples and it was written in three of the gospels.
Matthew, Mark, and Luke.
Like all incidents told by witnesses, and in the case of Luke one who had heard about it,
the retelling comes out somewhat differently.
Now I know accidents happen.
Now I know people being people we are not going to always report the same thing..
We tend to color events based on our experiences and so on.
When you read these reports of Jesus and his disciples crossing the Sea of Galilee in the Matthew, Mark and Luke
you will note an important difference in how what the report is and what we are told.
God does not create accidents.
The bible is the inspired word of God.
Three gospel writers tell us the same thing but with a God inspired twist.

Mat 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?
Mar 4:40 And he said unto them, Why are ye so fearful? how is it that ye have no faith?
Luk 8:25 And he said unto them, Where is your faith?

I have thought about those words for years once I made the connection.
I believe that it is no accident that they are recorded that way, when I see them together
I get a different message, a stronger message than when I read each alone.
God was not finished with me yet.
I don’t know how many times I have read the lyrics to the song Peace Be Still
When I got to the line
No water can swallow the ship where lies the Master of ocean and earth and skies;
I could feel the Spirit move in me.
I have dealt with this sermon for a long time, now I finally had a title
NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP
NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP
where lies the Master
NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP
where lies the Master
of ocean and earth and skies

NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP
Where lies the Master of your life.
We claim that Jesus is Lord of our lives.
We state that Jesus is the Master.
We proclaim that Jesus is the way.
We scream in the storm.

O ye of little faith
You know how it is,
You are In a Storm
You are Coming out of a Storm or
You are Headed into a Storm.
It seems that no matter what you do, the storms of life come.
It seems that no amount of love or prayer or just plain good living keeps the storms away.
I was talking with some one whose life was very different from mine.
Her life had been mostly one of peace.
She did not have rowdy friends; she never experimented with any substances
She did not do anything that should not be done.
Yet even in such a sedate and quiet life, the storms come.
The violent death of a husband through a car jacking.
A child who went the wrong way and uses drugs.
Storms come.
Storms are a fact of life.
Storms come down on the good and the not so good.
In the gospel of Matthew is says

Mat 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith?

The one thing reported in all three gospels is the words WHY ARE YE SO FEARFUL….
What is pushing your button so hard you can’t talk
What is pushing your button so hard you can’t move
What is pushing your button so hard you can’t think
O ye of little faith?
Turn to your neighbor on your left and Ask your neighbor
Do you have faith?
You know it don’t take much the gospels say.

Mat 17:20 And Jesus said unto them, Because of your unbelief: for verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed,

Jesus of course did not mean the physical mustard seed,
but Jesus did mean that real faith, true belief is not overwhelming.
Faith conquers doubt. Faith overcomes worry. Faith is bigger than self.
Why?
I think next to IF, WHY is the second biggest word in our language.
It is also the one often without an answer.
Why, is the word that creates doubt in us.
My ways are not you ways

No man can know the mind of God

God works in mysterious ways.

The clay does not tell the potter how to shape it.

We have read the scriptures that tell us those things.
We are not the controllers of this world, we are but actors in a play.
Yet we still ask why?
Why did my baby die?
Why can’t God get rid of evil?
Why did this happen to me?
Why?
Why?
We ask why and we doubt.
We doubt and faith decreases.
You only had a mustard seed amount of faith and then you work on that.
You diminish your faith with doubt.
Out there on the Sea of Galilee doubt got into the disciples.
They had doubt and they had fear.
Doubt, fear, worry, stress, and more, all of these are normal human emotions.
Thomas doubted until he saw, then Jesus told him many will believe without seeing.
Doubt can be conquered with faith.
You did not hear me.
Doubt can be conquered with faith.
Faith, belief that Jesus will do what Jesus said he would do for you.
It is not that you do not have doubt.
That is the meaning of being told about Thomas.
It is that you will overcome doubt with your faith.
You can rise above with Jesus.
When the storm of doubt rises.
When your ship is being tossed about and all you can see is a grave in the angry deep.
That is when your faith
Your faith
The same faith that Jesus spoke about to the woman with the issue of blood.
The centurions servant was healed by the faith of his master
The two blind men
And many more, it was their faith
In the midnight hour, at the darkest moment, when all seems lost.
Your faith in the ways of the God you know
Your faith in the ways of the God who loves you
Your faith in the ways of the God who provides for you
Your faith in the ways of the God who continues to protect you
Your faith will conquer doubt
What does God need to do?
The disciples had been with Jesus, seen what happen when Jesus prayed.
The disciples had heard Jesus tell people
Your faith has healed you.
Why are you doubtful, O ye of little faith.
Jesus has never
I said Jesus has never, never failed you yet.

How is it that ye have no faith
Then we get to those moments when we worry.
We worry about the job we may lose,
We worry about the job we just lost.
We worry.
I was told once that to worry is to be of two minds.
To worry is to be in conflict with yourself
To worry is to stay in a state so indecision
To worry is to always be fearful
Worry makes you careless
Worry causes you to miss the little things, to make mistakes to cause injury to yourself or others.
Worry is dangerous.
In the gospel of Mark

Mar 5:36 Jesus heard what they said, and he said to Jairus, "Don't worry. Just have faith!"

Don’t worry just have faith.
Is that so hard?
Well it must be for I find far too many people spending time worrying, fearful about the unknown,
scared of the future.
I could not sleep the other night, why, worry.
I had let the time slip by.
I had not paid for my car insurance and I thought it had lapsed.
Well it had.
My unrest the night was not the worry I thought it was, it was just the Holy Spirit.
I was being urged to get into action, get up and do something.
Now I could have stayed in bed, told myself to take care of it in the morning and forced myself back to sleep.
In the morning would have forgotten and moved on to something else and another day would have gone by.
Some times God through the Holy Spirit of God will talk to us.
You get a vision,
You get a thought
You get a feeling that does not sit well
You get moved to action
But we have free will
I can ignore the Spirit
I could have went back to sleep
I can tell God no
I can let things happen in my life
Then I can feel bad about them
Then I look up and cry
God why did you let this happen to me. Why?
So I got up
Went to my computer and found out I did not have enough money.
I called anyway and the insurance company computer told me I had to pay more than I had
So I got a person on the phone and God worked it out.
I had a letter in the mail, I did arrange to get reinstated and now I have a month to find more money.
God works it out.
The Holy Spirit is here to comfort us.
That is more than just holding your hand and saying it will be all right.

Every now and then James Cleveland starts talking in my mind.
Lord help me to hold out.
You see there is all kinds of comfort in the Holy Spirit
Lord help me to hold out
Lord help me to hold out
Until my change has come.
There is another set of lyrics in that song by another singer John P Kee

you've Got To Hold Out,
No Doubt,
That's What You Gotta Do
somebody Said It Was Hard,
But That's Not True
so Try To Never Deny The Power Of God,
just Keep The Faith,

There is no need to worry if your faith is there
Jesus should never have to ask you
How is it you have no faith
You know God cares
You do not worry
You hold out
You walk by faith and not by sight
Holding on to Gods’ unchanging hand.
Hold on.
Your change is coming
There is a brighter day ahead
in God's word we read.
If we trust in God Jesus said,
there's a brighter day ahead.
How is it you have no faith Jesus ask his disciple,
How can you be in this boat with me and have no faith
Will God let the storm overcome you?
How is it you have no faith.
No storm can swallow your ship
Where lies the Master of earth, sea, and skies
Don’t worry, be happy, you have Jesus.

Where is your faith?

I am sure everybody remembers the Janet Jackson song, “What Have You Done For Me Lately?”
Sometimes men hear that asked of them.
What have you done for me lately?
Is that a question you ask God?
Think about that.
In the boat that is crossing the Galilee, we find the disciples and Jesus.
Jesus is sleep.
The Disciples are scared.
The storm is raging
All they can see is a grave in the angry deep
Can’t you see them
I have had the experience of a violent storm at sea.
I was on a ship a hundred times bigger than that of the boat the carried Jesus.
And I saw waves higher than the ship which was eight stories tall.
I know what it is to feel small.
I know the feeling of the force of the wind and the rain.
I know fear.
The disciples were afraid.
The disciples had what we now call a senior moment.
Put yourself in the disciples place.
You have been walking with Jesus.
You have heard Jesus teach and preach.
More importantly, most importantly
You have seen Jesus pray, and through prayer healing has occurred, the dead has risen.
You say Jesus, Son of God
You think Jesus Son of God
But; Where is Your Faith?
Is that where you are at today.
You believe about Jesus but you lack belief in Jesus.

Mat 28:17 They saw him and worshiped him, but some of them doubted.

The disciple are with Jesus at the moment before his accession to heaven.
How many people sit here and worship Jesus, and when the storm hits they doubt?
You are not at fault.
The disciples walked and talked, ate and slept, laughed and prayed with Jesus,
Yet as is reported in the gospel of Matthew, “but some of the doubted”.
It was more than Thomas who was labeled a doubter.
What storm rages in your life that will cause you to forget, to doubt, to worry.
Can we get so caught in ourselves that faith is diminished.
O woe is me, why is this happening to me,
I don’t need this right now, I wish…., I want…., I
I am so caught up in myself because of the situation I can not see outside of me.
Looking at me pulls my spiritual head down.
Looking at me focuses my spiritual mind inward.
Looking at me, I do not look to Jesus.

Where is you faith Jesus asks?
I have faith Lord, it is just that stress
I have faith Lord, it is just that my mate, my kid, my job, my money
I have faith Lord, it is just that I am worried about me and I now doubt.
Where is your faith?
I got it Lord it’s around here somewhere.
I got faith Lord but this is such a big storm and you are asleep.
I am Jesus, I am the Trinitarian God.
I am Jesus, I am omnipresent, and I am always here.
I am Jesus, I am human and God, I am Jesus
Where is your faith?

Joh 20:30 And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:
Joh 20:31 But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.

Let me close by asking one more time as Jesus did

Where is your faith?
Do you truly walk by faith and not by sight?
Trusting and believing that the word of God is the path that leads to life everlasting.
Do you know that God has given you an example called Jesus?
Do you know that God has given you an intercessor to get you prayers to God?
Do you know that God has given you the Spirit of God to be with you, to comfort you?
To give you the strength to witness, to tell you story, to stand up for Christ.
Do you believe?
Say yes
Do you know where to turn in times of trouble?
Do you know that whatever the outcome Jesus is always there?
Do you know that no burden is too heavy for Jesus to lift from your shoulders?
Do you know that Jesus never sleeps, Jesus is always there
Say yes
NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP
where lies the Master
of ocean and earth and skies
NO WATER CAN SWALLOW YOUR SHIP
Where lies the Master of your life.

We scream in the storm.

That is the ultimate copout.
God inspires. That is without doubt. To discuss preaching styles, to critique a sermon, to talk about issues directly related to preaching in all the forms that is takes. The Sunday pulpit is not the only place.
To discuss homilies, weddings, deaths and other mini-preaching occasions.
iron does not actually sharpen iron, whet stones are not iron. One sword does not sharpen another.
God inspires but God does not do the work.

"This avenue to fellowship can only broaden the horizons of those who partake..." partake of what?

"And as for sermons and sermon ideas that is between you and God; for when a preacher gets the spirit of ministry the Lord himself gives him utterance to speak what is spoken to him in the spirit.."
If that was true seminaries, lectionaries and other similar devices would not exist.
Oh, I guess if "the Lord does not give utterance" it is not a blessed work? It is the belief I have and those who taught me that the preacher does the work, the idea, the study, the research, the writing, the practice, and so on and God joins the preacher in the pulpit to add inspiration. I am sure you think (maybe) that all those people who believe this are wrong?
"He who has a ear to hear let him hear what the spirit is saying to the church" That my friend is mystical cow whatever. Rev. 3:13, you really need to look at that verse in context and not try to fit it in eisegesis of that text.

I seek and look for preaching interchange. I am sure you are so accomplished that there is no room for improvement in you. I after 20 years of preaching am not, I seek knowledge and growth to improve what I do to better deliver the Word.

Minister T is correct theres preaching all on this network. Preachers preaching to one another, share groups and ideologies. This network is a good basis for preachers who would in no wise be able to get to know one another because most are seperated by denomimations and ministries. This avenue to fellowship can only broaden the horizons of those who partake, (iron sharpens iron). And as for sermons and sermon ideas that is between you and God; for when a preacher gets the spirit of ministry the Lord himself gives him utterance to speak what is spoken to him in the spirit (" for the Lord will give you what to say in that exact hour"). "He who has a ear to hear let him hear what the spirit is saying to the church"

I think it may also be , what you call preaching. I see preaching even in some of the answers people give. I also see a lot of preaching ideas. There are over 5,000 blogs and not to mentioned the video's! I also get preaching in the emails people send me.

RevZ62, have you posted a sermon or a sermon idea?
