“I would make you fisher of men” (Matthew 4:19) “Go and make disciples of all nations…” (Matthew 28:19)

As I was listening to this discussion my mind went to one of my new favorite TV shows is Deadliest Catch… This show is about a fishermen competing against one another for who could catch the most king crabs in a specified amount of time. The captains of the ships have to strategically plan on the best location and the best timing on where their bate and cages should be dropped. I like this show because it shows the importance of concentrating on the job at hand. The lack of concentration can result in the lost of lives, cargo and even money. This show has a boat called the American… now the American have a good captain as well as a good deck crew. When they launched out into the deep the captain in this particular episode, hastily dropped his bate in what he thought were good water. In an effort to get ahead of the competition, the captain went against his normal rules in hopes for a good catch. After 24 hours of the bate being in the water the captain then told the crew to start wheeling in their bates… When the crew wheeled in the bates… they thought they hit the jack pot because of the size and amount of crabs that were in the cages… It was after opening up the cages and examining the crabs they realized the crabs had to be returned back into the water because they didn’t meet the standards of the sea fishing rules…

We live in a time when much attention is centered on evangelism. Many congregations are so caught up in evangelism that many of preachers are going against the foundation of the Word in hopes to catch new converts. Many of preachers are forgetting and or ignoring the principles of Christianity in order to fill up their churches. Just like the captain of the American they have left their first love in hopes of getting ahead of the game. Sermon-ettes by preacher-ettes making Christian-ettes… Just like the captain when it’s time for examination, their churches are filled to capacity with folks that are unregenerate, unconverted and that doesn’t measure up to disciples. Jesus last instructions to His Church were to make disciples not to fill up their nets… Sometimes we get confused as to what a disciple really is. A disciple is not defined as being a church member, choir member, missionary or evangelism member, Sunday school teacher, a preacher, or just one that has joined a particular church… That’s church members… A disciple is a follower of Jesus Christ of His Word which is the teachings of the whole Bible… One could be a church member without being a disciple… Church members believe in God but disciples live in God… (I could go on and on with showing the difference between the two… I urge every preacher/believer to get the book “The Cost of Discipleship” by Bonheoffer…)

Pastors,
Check your churches to see if you’ve caught unconverted folks are disciples…
