Should a pastor that spends most of his time preaching and teaching get paid for what God has him to do? I know what the scriptures says about this, but would you pastor for free?

There is nothing wrong with receiving money from a congregation. However, it all depends on how this is done. Historically, people brought gifts to their spiritual leaders and other "men of G-d". If someone brings you a gift out of love or appreciation there's nothing wrong with that. But if you require money of the congregation then you are stepping into territory that is problematic.

The first problem is that people tend to use the priesthood and how they were supported as meaning they as pastors should be supported too. However there is really no link between priests and pastors. Priests were of a specific family, the Levites, and weren't given a natural inheritance of land like the other tribes. So the other tribes took care of them. They were set a part to be there all day every day to make sacrifices for the people and that's also how they ate. They were part of the sacrificial system. However, rabbis were the ones who were more like modern pastors. They could be from any tribe and not even all of them were teachers and most probably weren't pastoral. They may have been bothered throughout the week but no more than the way people bother pastors. They most likely received gifts but there was no requirement to pay them.

However, rabbis are not equivalent to Catholic Priests or Protestant ministers either. These roles have influenced later rabbis but a rabbi was not a set apart job that G-d had anything to do with making sure people supported so that they wouldn't have to work. The amount of work done by a pastor is his choice. If people call at all hours needing to talk to someone, the only reason why they do is because they think and are used to the notion that this is your job. And this is why many pastors have become life coaches and free psychologists. There is no such thing in the bible and even if you think there should be you have no right to add anything to the bible or use it to convince people you need to be paid so you can do this full-time.

To accept tithes and get paid out of tithes is wrong. That money should not even be collected if its not going to those who scripture says that money was for. It was for the Levites, the widows, and the fatherless. It provided for people who didn't have a provider in the house. Through Tithing G-d was able to provide for them so that THEY were taken care of. Tithe was collected to make sure the congregation was taken care of, not its teachers. Ministers who take tithe for themselves without repentance, I believe, will be called to account-especially if there are widows and fatherless children in that congregation.

There is nothing wrong with receiving gifts but the most you should do is let people know that you're not getting paid to be there for them so if they want help support you with gifts that is acceptable. But using guilt or fear to get people to pay you money is wickedness. No one should be paid to love and support a congregation like its a just another job. Yeshua set an example for how his disciples were to go out and preach the gospel. Nothing in his example had the walking around with their hand out in return for preaching to people. Because ultimately, the word of G-d is free. You cannot put a price on it.
And back then it wasn't like it is today. Back then only the rich had their own copy of the torah. Most people didn't have access to read the bible 24/7 and so this is why they had a more natural reliance on sages or rabbis who knew it very well. This isn't the case today. Today, everyone who wants one can have a bible. Bibles are so common place and often times free that there are extras that are battered and treated worse than other books.

Today people have such an unnatural dependence on pastors to tell them what the book they own says that they are not really taking advantage of their 24/7 access to the bible. The whole point in your sermons should be to inspire and foster an environment where people are led to G-d, not to you. And if they are led to G-d they will read the bible for themselves. If they are led to you and your charisma they will often be led AWAY from G-d and from personal study because they're not following G-d because they're too busy following YOU.

The more people are following you the more your pastoring will be a full time job. People are too dependent on the personal relationship they believe their pastor has with G-d and he becomes a medium through which they seek help. But ultimately this is an unhealthy relationship. They need to learn how to pray, how to believe, how to have the relationship themselves to where they don't need a pastor to hold their hand. Because ultimately, you can't save them or be righteous for their sake.
Mr. Robinson writes: "I believe that a pastor should be paid for his work. However being a man/woman of God you should be a blessing more than a burden to the church."

Shalom,...I might add we should get back to the original Bible 'church' ~~that breaking bread~~ house to house fellowship..in the community in reverence and helping one to another~~~would anyone agree... ? At last count it costs three plus billion "that's with a "B" $$$
[ barna reports~ etc.] to operate the various demonations not counting the perks, the four starr hotels for Good" crowd movers/pleasers etc...Such a farce.. IMHO
This -un repented country now has an un repented government just like everything else is out of alignment with the Torah basics. And raping Amerika blind such a shame and all because the house is divided similar to this thread.

Folks we need a serious Baal Teshuvah movement like Yeshua, R. Hillel, the Essenes' and others tried to do. ..however it seems that nobody listened.
Two thousand years later and we still do not get it.
One G-d Shema YIsrael Deverim 6:v4-9 and the Mitzvot commandments 1 & 2
One Torah which was before the beginning is given freely to all who study. You have need of no man teach you stated Yochannon the Talmidim that 'Yeshua loved' That idiom from your Rabbi means in Hebrew That John got it!!..That is the Adam Qadmon he is talking about in john 1~ and John 14:1-2 John Got it he connected to the divine...One' as yeshua was One/Echad with ABBA.

The power is in the Hebrew letters folks Raise the dead heal the sick /Refuah health and healing It is all in the Torah... It is time to actualize it If the milk theology stuff is over..
That is why I went back to my Jewish/sephardi roots of teaching and historical Hasidic learning. No jump and shout runaround stuff No fluffy bunny stuff just a pure reverence and the received tradions, so rich I have not words to tell you... But to each his own I suppose.
I have mentioned where folks can get the original rulings re the tithe and so much more However it goes unheeded it seems..That is why 'many are called and few are chosen' ~I hear HaShem saying"

Your forty two journeys in the wilderness can be somewhere up on a mountain OR playing in the quagmire of the golden calf..the choice is yours, if you overcome the fear of going up! [ Deut.~Deverim 5:v5 ]
Remember it is reverence and Teshuvah / repentance~that moves the hand of G-d not bribery..SEE; Deverim/Deut.10:v17

A pastor should get paid for his services, Pastors go to school have to pay for there own tuition. A true Pastor wont to serve the people of God fulltime. He needs time to seek the lord, pray, fast and not worry about bills and everything else like that.It is not easy being a pastor it is a lot of hard work. You have to deal with people that do not wont you to have anything but they are able to have whatever they like. They will tell you, a pastor should not worry about a new car and they go by themselves a new car. People do not respect pastors like they use to. If it was not for pastors obeying God a lot of people will still be on drugs, fornicates, gossipers, adulteries, Etc. God uses man to complete his purpose. So do not be so holy that you are no earthly good. Some people do not love there pastors they use them and through them away and some people wont to be able to control them. They are broke so they would like there pastor to be broke it makes them fell better about themselves. So if God sends a person to be at a job and they are not getting paid anything they my not take the job. It is not about money. It is about appreciation. If a man tells his wife he love her and he never pays any bills and does nothing around the house. But he loves her God's provides for them. Love is an action word and if you love someone you wont the best for them. Not the least. Let start back honoring our pastor. I am a pastor, my wife have to share me with the world. Think about this if I live in a place were everyone has a Lexus there will be no complaints. But if a person comes an has a ford then they may say everyone has a Lexus, they think they are better thing us are something. If the pastor ask people to help him pay his bills because he does not get salary but he is going though the people will talk about him and most of the time not help him. But tell him we will pray for you God will provide.
Mr. McClain writes:"Pastors go to school have to pay for there own tuition.
And what did your Rabbi do???... He went to a yeshiva or Academy for a lifetime. ..and then went out and did Tikkun Olam! As all Jewish Rabbis try to do even to this day..
But you do not see them jumping around shouting foolish pablum to the sheep...

They actually study everything of G-d and all the Rabbinic theology and Hasidic teachings and all the received traditions (Qaballah) and the Zohar and the Tanya and on and on and on the list goes until they are filled to overflowing as a well of love to the people..and The Orthodox assures they are worthy to feed the people

Before they can teach others.
Not like the Xian church a few years of superficial study,... a degree of sorts,... then given a position of some demonation or they start another group,... Is that not so?
Deep Study is not so in the Christian circles.

The Blind showmen' lead the blind sheeple...they use a few picked out scriptures and incite the people to give for the flesh.. and false doctrines~ Yeshua would have spit out. the foolishness and Stated he did not come to take away from the torah But to fullfill it [ In your Bible Matis Yahu 5:v17ff]~That word translated in the Hebrew Idiom is to walk it out~~~..John Stated that to Abide in the teachings of Yeshua that you needed to Walk it out~First John2:v6~.at least Yeshua/J-sus was a Tzaddik, a Pious Jew- Rabbi~~before he went out to teach the Gentiles the Seven Noahide laws and to the Jew Torah~~IMO
1Timothy 3:1-8 This is a true saying, if a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach; Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous; One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?) Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;

Titus 1:6-11 If any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God; not selfwilled, not soon angry, not given to wine, no striker, not given to filthy lucre; But a lover of hospitality, a lover of good men, sober, just, holy, temperate; Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. For there are many unruly and vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision: Whose mouths must be stopped, who subvert whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

1Peter 5:2-3 Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind; Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock.

The Preacher is only suppose to use the tithes to further the church. He should have a separate job, and pay tithes himself to the Lord. Anyone who get's paid by the church, in my opinion does not have the best interests of the Church at heart unless it is to gain from the church.
After twelve years of pastoring God's People, I have found that we could never really be "paid" for what we are expected to do. Furthermore, if we do it right, we invest so much time, energy and resources into our ministry that it can never be repaid. Therefore it is imperative that the "Servant of the Lord" be accommodated in such a way that is befitting and fair. If the "Servant" is a "workman" then he/she is worthy...". We need to help our people understand that ministry is reciprocal! We need to be both givers and receivers if we are to be appropriately blessed. This is the only way, I believe, that a ministry will be fruitful and prosper according to the way God intended.
Mr Deciple ( talmidim) writes:"I don't know anybody who truly tithes according to the Law of Moses."

May I suggest this for starters~~~Only about Fourteen million Torah Observant Jews who are Echad with the Marital agreement At Sinai...Enjoy your journey.. If I can humbly help any one come out of the Qagmire let me know..Check my Book blog It is filled with good Historical starter references

PS John 8:v32 is talking about Torah' Oral and Recieved traditions~~ You shall know Torah within Because you are a Living Torah yo u are a conduit through which the Divine Master can work in and through you to this sick and dying humanity~~
Simply: Because you are one~echad' with G-d.

you walk the walk..as Yochannon nicely wrote for you...First john 2:v6~~

Shalom Aleichem
Yaakov,

Say what?

I know Mr.Pierce,...that was a little deep
How to become One with the father? Yeshua stated; I pray,... that they (his Talmidim) become One as he was one...What is that??
What part of the soul can connect to the Master,... The Yer-hi-dah'...the aspect of the soul that deals with Oneness...

Let us continue on this path...if you care...the Master creator/YHVH/G-d/~is not concerned with religious foolishness and misconstruction. He is far more interested in obedience to the Torah that was before the foundation of all things...and that we connect to Him and only HaShem...no middle person needed.

The Torah foundation is the Brides instructions and so much more...However, only when we get past the quagmire of contension....and fleshly ideals, will we get to go up higher...But first the washing.
