I think it is very important that preachers of today need to be seminary trained .

i say that because there are no more dumb folk in the church and i feel that it is a sad day for the preacher if he has somebody in the congregation that knows more about the bible than the preacher. Also i feel that if the pulpit is dumb then the pews are dumb.

I too agree. Ministers should be formally trained to teach followers who are living in our diversified world today. It is no longer enough for ministers to relay what they have heard down through the years. We need men and women who have a proficient knowledge of the word to pass on to their flocks. Church members are more educated and they hungry and thrist for the word. And, a lot of loud hollering and what I call hooping is not effective if there is not a real message based on the word. We need to be able to reach the younger generation, and they are not impressed with how loud you can holler, they seek the word, and they need explinations that can be supported by the word. Often scripture goes deeper than what man can interpet themselves, the Holy Spirit is needed. But also, intelligent, learned, teachers are needed to be able to discern the word.

The Scripture says to rightly divide the word. Not to go to a school and get an education. What you suggest is that HaShem is not Teaching through The Ruach HaKodesh. The Pharasees and Sadducess were all Educated men of the word and Held the higest degrees. Shaul(Paul) who was one of them was taken out and re-educated by The Ruach. here is an example of Rightly Dividing the Word.

Strongs concordance 3467-ישע -yasha; primary root word; for 3442-ישוע-Yeshuwa(Jesus): Prop. to be open, wide or free, i.e. (by impl.) to be safe; causat. to free or succor:-x at all, avenging, defend, deliver(-er), help, preserve, rescue, be safe, bring (having) salvation, save (iour), get victory.

CHARACTER-The combination of qualities distinguishing any person or class of persons; any distinctive mark or trait, or belonging to any person class or race; the individuality which is the product of nature, habits and environment.
2- High qualities; moral foorce
3- Reputation
4- A representation; assumed part; role
6- Position; status.
7 The person holding or represented as holding a certain position or rank.
8- A figure engraved, written, or printed; mark; sign; letter.

Now is this not the way that we are to emulate the word by character and by the definitin that defines Him. And in the Eighth definition we see that "character" can also be written word. So we should understand that our character can be found in the Scripture. This is how we Step to the next Level. Rightly Dividing the Word of the Lord.

Example 2:

Bere'shit Bara Elohim ata....In the beginning God created..Genesis 1:1

This is the Beginning of all that Exists as we have come to know creation.

But let us take a deeper look into the first word that The Most High chose to place as the Introduction to the Scripture.

בואש'ח-Bere'shit- In the beginning.

ב-Bet or ב'ח-Beth= second letter in the Hebrew alphabet.

Now Bere'shit is the first "Letter of Revelation" from The Lord to the people of the world. In English we say Genesis. But lets have a look in to the Hebrew meaning of the scripture.

Now this Scripture begins not from the first person perspective of some mans vocabulary, but instead from an omniscient 3 person perspective. A voice that reveals the Glorious Power that created the entire cosmos by means of His voice. This we see throughout the entire first chapter. We also see the Triune perspective of the Elohim by the way this scripture is written "Elohim eta" means multiple in this form with the verb bara preceding it. The first verse is revealing here the triune nature of G-d.

Now ב-Bet. This is the first letter in the word Bere'shit. This word has a multiple meaning as well. But here we will see the Divine nature of its use.

ב-Bet means house and also chai or life.

The House of Creation is then the Life of the universe. ב-Bet

ב-Bet also has a meaning of "IN". here suggesting G-d's intention from the start of abiding within the realm of creation.

So now that we know this lets take a further look into the plan of The Lord.

He said, He who is the House of All, would come and dwell within a house that He created. And this House would would have The Life of all eternity within it. This is the first Prophesy of the Messiah.

The first word in Hebrew is Aleph, meaning the Father and the Second is Bet meaning the Son and the third is Gimel the Holy Spirit. Every word that was delivered to Moses is a prophesy all within its self. We have to take the time to gain a clear understanding of the letters to fully understand the word itself. This is also why The Lord said that we could not live ti the full letter of the Law. This because we had no understanding of prophesies and the prophesies that had yet to come. We lacked the ability to gain a full understanding, But now we are able to see the fullness of the work of the Lord which is why we are to look back even now to gain this same understanding that may have been lost or just simply overlooked. The question is "Do we really look or Do we just read"? We should be the type to properly search out the truth. This is the meaning of to "rightly divide". The only way to divide is to take apart not take away. The only way to take apart is to start from the root. The root is The Lord and the beginning is the words that He gave us with His finger.

So Remember to properly investigate the Word of the Lord by using the letters that He gave and you will move to the next level in the Kingdom.

Be Blessed in all you do and keep The Lord First.

Shalom and Shavuah Tov.

YAL, do you mean "Bere'shith"? Since when did the first three letters in Hebrew equate to trinitarianism, epsecially since Hebrews did not believe in any such doctrine??...I am confused here....but I do concur--most of the time,we just read (if THAT) --we do not LOOK.
I think EDUCATION is important for everybody, those in the pulpit and those in the congregation.

But, are you limiting God by ignoring the effectiveness of God given revelation and the gifts of knowledge and wisdom?
Evangelist--I do not think that being educated limits God at all--I think NOT being educated limits God because we are limited cognitively. Even if God speaks to us by revelation, if we have no frame of reference for what He is saying, we are bound to reduce the revelation to our own limited understanding. Gifts of knowledge and wisdom are wonderful--and it seems we are in a shortage of them in the body of Christ-lol. We need the wisdom of God--but wisdom is the practical application of knowledge--and it's more difficult to exercise wisdom in the absence of knowledge. Many of our black mamma's had "mother wit"--it really was wisdom passed down through the culture--mother wit and knowledge both are DANGEROUS to ignorance and arrogance. While much learning can make us mad, much ignorance can make us bad....

You mentioned how good it was for those in the congregation to be educated---I'd LOVE to see a discussion brew about that one....Lord---I'm getting excited about the IDEA of those in our congregations being more educated--that would keep the preachers sharp and on their toes...
It truly is the call of God that gets a man going. All a believer has to do is get serious about God's word, study the historical backgrounds of each book of the bible, and also study the languages, preferably Greek, exegesis, and hermenuetics, and you have the foundation for interpreting Gods word. One does not need to attend seminary, or bible college to learn these things.
Brother Pierce, it seems to me that any man or woman who is self-taught only is dangerous and subject to teaching other's ERROR. How can a self-taught preacher tell their parishoners to sit under their instruction and be taught? Seems hypocritcal to me.

When one is self-taught, there is no check and balance system in place, and there is no one to help etermine one's strengths and weaknesses, and what measures should be taken to deal with both. In addition, when people are under tutilege of another, it is possibole that his or her character will also be challenged and worked on...without being accountable to another (a mark of integrity), we are likely to let ourselves off the hook, make excuses for our shortcomings that we actually believe, and to overshoot (or under) our own abilities. It is difficult to test and assess our own knowledge and competence---this must be done by someone in position over us. In addition, the classroom provides diversity, social learning and the ability to be enhanced by the expertise, gifts, and experiences of others in our class.

If one does not need a "LIVE" teacher, then I think it should be OK for middle school and high school children read books, study langauges on line and other disciplines--since they know how to research and read for themselves. But it is NOT ok--EVERY one needs a teacher, and a systemmatic way in which to be taught and trained. One can never learn as much alone as he or she can from experienced others. If we did not need to sit under master-teachers, then the Lord would would have negated His own wisdom in sending us teachers, prophets, apostles, etc. Such a concept of teaching oneself violates biblical protocol for learning.

One IS, however, responsible for his or her own study time, and own self-development....he or she is responsible for making her or himself coachable, teachable, and trainable through submission to authority, self-discipline, and self-study. Most of us FLUNK royally in this regard....even many who were formally trained lack the discipline of continuing study and life-long learning. Finally, Greek is hard WITH a teacher--fleuncy in it is difficult without one. Also, I'd like to know why is Greek preferable to Hebrew, since "Christianity" is an outgrowth of Yahudaism (Judaism)????

In Luke 19, Jesus rewarded the servants with more who used what he had given them to create more, they were creative with what he had given them. If you place limits on what God has given you, you are not utilizing whats available to you to the fullest. Each were given the same-but the one who became ruler over 10 more cities, was resourceful with what Christ had given Him. His resourcfulness didn't disregard what Christ had given Him it intensified it. You see, if Christ hadn't given what he had given, the servant wouldn't have anything to work with. It all begins with what Christ gives, and we become responsible for making the most of what has been given. God gives the anointing, and if you don't do something with that anointing, and think that you have done enough, you may be included or excluded like the 7 not mentioned when Christ returned to give his reward.
YES LAWD....lol
Yes, I agree with you! Its as if we're too busy trying to turn our relationship with God into a philosophical debate! We're too busy thinking, that's where we go wrong!

I know plenty of ignorant, non-critical thinking people that have a degree. :-} Please I mean no offense...but this discussion and thread has turned into a "Who's smarter contest." It's ridiculous....GOD IS GOD! HE HOLDS ALL THE CARDS, no matter who you know, what you know and what you think!

LET'S SAY THAT THERE'S A MAN WHO HAS BEEN IN A COMA SINCE THE AGE OF 10 AND HE IS NOW 35 YEARS OLD! 5th grade education, no social interaction, etc! GOD CAN....heal that man, give him revelation, make him an APOSTLE, PROPHET, PASTOR, EVANGELIST AND/OR TEACHER! Give him the GRACE to do the work of the office and through him save millions of souls! THIS IS OUR GOD! IT AIN'T ABOUT US! I joined this site because I figured I'd finally be around some people that knew that by now!

THIS IS ABOUT OUR GOD, OUR KING who's thoughts are not our thoughts and whose ways are not our ways! How dare we limit those by our standands....How dare we limit GOD!
Well now I wouldnt say "dumb" as much as ignorant. And ignorant in th true sense of the word not belittling the person. Ignorance is merely a state of "not knowing".

However I agre that a person should be trained and "knowledgeable" about the word of God. But one must be careful that their knowledge doesn't become idolatrous. Meaning, In all your getting, get WISDOM! And wisdom can only come from God.

We can have just as many educated fools running around as we do ignorant fools. Who make foolish decisions based on what they know (or don't know) instead of being LED by the Holy Spirit.

Discernment does not come from book knowledge

And going to an actual seminary... well, everyone can't afford that. But a growing number of men and women of God ARE attending seminaries, bible colleges and the like so that they CAN rightly divide the word of truth.

Lastly, with all the info that is availible to us online and offline... NO ONE should be running around saying, "my PASTOR said this or that" without going back and searching the scriptures FOR THEMESELVES to see if their pastor is on point.

Just because a persons sermon or lesson my tickle my ears doesn't mean I'm going to run with it as biblical truth. I'm always taking notes and going back to see for myself if what they said is true. I'll ask the Lord to confirm the word... or just trust the Holy Spirit to confirm it within my spirit if I won't have time to immediately go back and research it.

I say we ALL should be like those Bereans....

~Evg. Tracy Curtis~
I do think its important that all of us wether preacher or layman to strive to learn more about the word of God. While I think that it is good and admirable that preachers go to seminary; I don't think that this is the only avenue to studying the word of God.
