There is a question that people are thinking in their minds "Is the Holy Spirit always about speaking in tongues?" The answer is absolutely not. The Holy Spirit is not always about speaking in tongues, although I believe in the Baptism of the Holy Spirit with the physical evidence of speaking in tongues according to Acts 2:4. Yes, speaking in tongues is the physical evidence of a person being baptized in the Holy Spirit, and Gifts of the Holy Spirit are in operation according to 1 Corinthians 12:8-11. But the true evidence of a person having the Holy Spirit inside of his life is having spiritual fruits according to Galatians 5:22-23. Yes, a person who has a heavenly gift of tongues should use their prayer language daily to receive daily fullness. But, spiritual fruits are more important than the gifts.

The job of the Holy Spirit is not just to enable you to speak in other tongues, dance, jump, shout, fall on the floor, and lay hands on sick seeing the sick recover, although they are the moving of the Holy Spirit. But, you got to think about the various jobs that the Holy Spirit performs. According to John 14:26, Jesus promised that the Father will send down the Comforter in His name. What is the Comforter? The Comforter is the Holy Spirit, also known in the Greek term parakletos, meaning helper or counselor. It means that He can comfort you in trying times, help you bring what you learned in classes and studied into rememberance during exams, and bring revelation. Also, the Holy Spirit leads and guides us into all truth. In addition, according to John 16:9,14, the Holy Spirit convicts us on where we sinned and fell short of God's glory.

Acts 1:8 states that you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. Why did the Holy Spirit give us power? He gave us power to be witnesses, speak his word with boldness, and to live right. In addition according to Romans 15:16, the Holy Spirit sanctifies us, meaning that He can also help us to stay saved

Is it possible to have the Holy Spirit in you and not speak in tongues? Absolutely, yes!! According to Ephesians 1:13, 4:30, because you're saved, you are sealed with the Holy Spirit, meaning stamp of approval.

Why did I write this message? Well, I wrote this message because it's been on my heart. My point is that the Holy Spirit is the third person of the Trinity and a biblical thing, not a denominational thing. The incident that disturbed me is when the elder at my home church, who is in Florida on an apostolic project, talked about how he shut off Charles Stanley because of his statements on tongues being used as psychology. Also, the elder was judging Charles Stanley as not having the Holy Spirit because he doesn't believe in speaking in tongues. I myself find nothing wrong with Charles Stanley. Neither did my late pastor. Charles Stanley is a great preacher and teacher, and he teaches on the Holy Spirit more than any other preacher. I don't care about Charles Stanley's theology, as long as he preaches sound doctrine. What I meant is as long as he preaches biblical doctrine.

I want to tell you that just because you speak in tongues doesn't mean that you're a Super Christian. Don't look down on Christians who don't speak in tongues and believe in tongues. They're your brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus. As Christians, the issue of tongues is not the central theme of the Gospel. The central theme of the Gospel is salvation through Jesus Christ.

If you enjoy this message, give me an amen!!

I agree that the central theme of the Gospel is salvation through Jesus Christ and unfortunately a lot of churches don't preach salvation! I too was one that didn't all together believe that speaking in tongues meant someone could talk to the Angels but as your reference to Acts 2:4 I still thought that passage was referring to the men being able to understand one anothers language where before the Holy Spirit filled them they couldn't understand one another as in Act: 2:8. But I'd been wondering because Paul has stated though he speaks to Angels and have been schooled by those blessed with God's Knowledge on this site to understand some can speak in tongues but I agree it doesn't mean this person is some super christian or is any better than anyone else. As Paul said if you do speak in tongues or some other language and others don't understand then what good is it if the other doesn't understand. Unfortunealy some of us do things for show and that is unfortuneate when it comes to God's Word.
The power that is spoken of ; Is the power too perform what other mere humans cannot. The central message of the Gospel is Love, as the central message of the O.T. is also. But one seems only to want some aspects of the Holy Ghost. The power of God extends far beyond what we could think in any capacity. You see the Power in which they received, was the same power the Apostles used in telling the lame man to rise up and walk. That which the Spirit hears is that which it utters. There are so many aspects too the Holy Ghost that we cannot contain it all.

what is being misinterpreted is that some do not speak in tongues, well some do not love, suffer etc.. So one must be careful not to blaspheme any of the aspects of the Holy Ghost, in order not to blaspheme period.
I truly agree as well. I feel that today, there are too many Christians who use the Holy Spirit as a spiritual steroid. What I mean by this is that there are too many Christians who are looking to be instantly filled for the purpose of an emotional uplift. But we must understand that one cannot function effectively if they are not operating in the Word of God. This suggest to us that it is alright to speak in tongues, but one needs to make sure that that they have an interpreter in order that there will be no confusion. The power of the Holy Spirit is to empower us to do the will of God and function effectively as believers. Tongues is a gift but it is not the main gift. Jesus is the main gift!
Amen, Brotha. Thank you for posting your thoughts and starting this very necessary discussion. I am doing a sermon series on being filled with the Holy Ghost as we speak. I thank God for it and the fruit that shall manifest as a result of it.

Let me add to the discussion how the Holy Ghost empowers us to be more relational. This goes hand-in-hand with what some are posting in regards to the issue of love and the Gospel. The fruit of the Spirit and the gifts are to make us more relational with one another in the kingdom. I cannot see how any of the fruit of the Spirit can manifest outside of the context of relationships. I have to love others. I get joy from fellowship with others. I enjoy peace in my relationships and storms. Etc.

This is crucial because of how our society, to include our churches, are becoming more and more disconnected. People in our churches today do not know each other and getting to know one another doesn't see, to be too high of a priority. It seems to be something we hope will manifest as a by-product of being together in worship or study or whatever.

I want to encourage everyone to consider how disconnected persons are becoming in the world and how its playing out in violence in our schools, divorce, and folks of all ages investing an abundance of time alone on the Internet. When we are told not to conform to this world, we have to structure the ministries God has given us in such a way where the Spirit of God is connecting people to their purpose and one another so their gifts can flow as we all serve one another. I cannot see how we can talk about the Spirit of God and not discuss how He empowers us to connect with one another and serve one another in addition to everything else that has been mentioned. I'm not saying relationships is more important than salvation or tongues. I'm just saying it is an important piece of the puzzle that I don't hear too many of us articulate. Please remember that Jesus said the world would know we are His disciples by the love we have for one another...not by whether or not we speak in tongues. Many of us speak in tongues in our church, so I'm not against it. But there are issues that warrant more attention.
My Brothers in Christ, you've said it all.
Amen, Bro!!! Also, John 13:5 says that to be be a true disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ, you must have love. Love is the fruit of the Spirit. If you speak the tongues of angels, yet lack love in your heart, you sound like a clammoring cymbal. So, fruit is more important than the gifts. By the way, the Devil himself speaks in tongues.
Hi dear brothers and sisters in Christ!

THE HOLY SPIRIT IS NOT ALWAYS ABOUT SPEAKING IN TONGUES! NO!

What is the proof of the Holy Spirit Baptism?

Our Lord Jesus-Christ can operate miracles by you. You can receive the true unction to operate miracles, but what is more important, is to be inhabited by the Holy Spirit.

But, please, be careful because the Bible says:

“for false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform signs and miracles to deceive the elect - if that were possible.”

Mark 13:22

Even a false Doctor, a false Pastor or a false prophet can receive the true unction from God to operate miracles because the Bible declares:

“that you may be sons of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.”

Matthew 5:45

Moreover, the Bible declares:

“It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance, because to their loss they are crucifying the Son of God all over again and subjecting him to public disgrace.
Land that drinks in the rain often falling on it and that produces a crop useful to those for whom it is farmed receives the blessing of God. But land that produces thorns and thistles is worthless and is in danger of being cursed. In the end it will be burned”

Hebrews 6: 4-8

The unction which enables someone to operate miracles is not enough to save him/her. The Holy Spirit must dwell in you. You must be the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:19).

And if the Holy is in you, you will bear fruit:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Galatians 5:22-23

In spite of the miracles which you do operate thanks to the true unction which is on you, the Bible declares that if you do not have the Holy Spirit, then you do not belong to Christ. AMEN!

“You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.”

Romans 8:9

It is the reason why our Lord Jesus-Christ said:

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and in your name drive out demons and perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!'

Matthew 7:21-23

Please brothers and Sisters in Christ; you must pray God so that the Holy Spirit can dwell in you!

Indeed, the Bible says:

« If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!"

Luke 11:13

The Holy Spirit is a token, a mark, a seal of approval FROM GOD HIMSELF. Amen!

“And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,”

Ephesians 1:13

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.”

Ephesians 4:30

Indeed, God gives His Holy Spirit to those that obey Him (Acts 5:32)
The Bible says that signs will accompany those who believe. In the name of Jesus- Christ they will drive out demons; they will speak in new tongues”

Mark 16:17

Besides, after the Holy Spirit baptism, it is true that one can speak in other tongues. This is possible:

“All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.”

Acts 2:4

But, the fact that one speaks in other tongues is not the absolute obviousness that someone has received the gift of the Holy Spirit, because it is possible to have the Holy Spirit in you and not speak in tongues, not operate miracles. Amen!
Indeed, the Bible says that “God also testified to it by signs, wonders and various miracles, and gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.”

Hebrews 2:4

All of us cannot speak in different kinds of tongues, work miracles, have gifts of healing, speak in tongues, interpret etc.
Indeed, the Bible declares:

“Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it. And in the church God has appointed first of all apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then workers of miracles, also those having gifts of healing, those able to help others, those with gifts of administration, and those speaking in different kinds of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all teachers? Do all work miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? But eagerly desire the greater gifts. And now I will show you the most excellent way.”

1 Corinthians 12:20-31

The proof of the Holy Spirit baptism is as follows:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”

Galatians 5:22-23

Indeed, the Bible declares:

“If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.
Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.
And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.”

1 Corinthians 13:1-13

Now let me ask a question to each one of you: Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you had believed (Acts 19:2)?

This is a wonderful post. I've been reading the replies and have been very blessed and uplifted. I believe every believer should have a daily interaction with the Holy Spirit with the purpose and intent of being filled to boldly proclaim the message of Christ to all they encounter. The manifestation of that encounter (be it tongues, or spiritual gifts) should be to the edifying of the believer and the salvation of the nonbeliever.

No church or denomination should ever lay claim to the Holy Spirit and no believer should try to manipulate the Holy Spirit. He gives gifts freely and comforts continually. My daily prayer is that I be filled with the Holy Spirit daily and become an authentic follower of Christ and preacher of the gospel.
For further discussion, if speaking in so-called tongues is a gift, then everyone cannot have it, therefore how can it be evidence of salvation? This is like saying that the gift of preaching is evidence of salvation and only those who preach are saved. Jesus Himself gave the evidence of salvation by saying; "all men will know that you are my followers by the Love you have one for another." I have read post on this very site where people wanted to speak in these false tongues because the people who spoke this jibberish seem more saved. No one is more saved or more holy than another Christian because if it was not for the blood sacrifice of Christ (Our Savior) we would all be destined for destruction. The Holy Spirit was never about speaking in tongues, Jesus said He would teach us and guide us, and He would not testify of Himself but of Jesus. Some how we have gotten away from Jesus' teachings and into over stating the ministry of the Holy Spirit. Elementary teaching, God (Our Creator), Jesus (Our Savior), The Holy Spirit (Our Teacher). I do not believe in tongue speaking in its current existence, too many are using it too think they have something no body else has, God has never wanted us to arrogant but humble. Paul stated that tongues would cease and I believe the need for "tongues" in the church today has ceased, but love is the only thing that last. The word that is translated tongues in the greek means a known language, the mumbo jumbo that we hear in the church is not a know language, its more of a satanic chant.
Rev Luckett,
I always enjoy reading your post and comments and thanks for taking the time to read mine. I guess it would be safe to say I have a problem with the modern day tongue speaking doctrine, mainly because it places too much emphasis on the individual. People brag about being able to speak in tongues, and people desire it because they think it to make them exceptionally holy. This modern day movement is not biblical, it is not based on the Word, to be used in proper biblical perspective there should be an interpreter and only two at most three people actively involved in the process (1 Corinthians 14:27) but we see the entire congregation now up a babbling, which Paul also warned the church about. 1 Corinthians 14:23 states: so if the whole church comes together and all speak in tongues, and unbelievers or uninformed people enter, will they not say that you have lost your minds?
I believed your son asked the question many Christians want to ask and that is what are you saying? Here is how they cover that, that it is not for the church but they are edifying themselves, again it is the misinterpretation of 1 Corinthians 14:1, now to fully understand this text would require a theological discussion, but it does not mean we are literally speaking to God, it is Paul’s way of saying you are bragging because over and over he has explained that gifts are only for the building up of the church. Why would anyone want to introduce confusion into the church by using a unknown language?
As simply as I can put it the gift of tongues (foreign language) was used to spread God’s Words to other nations not for individual showmanship. We all speak in the same languages in our churches, there is no need for anyone to come in and speak in Japanese, now if we have a person who speaks only Japanese we would need to have their conversation interpreted and they would need ours interpreted. Now if there was no one who could interpret Japanese and all of a sudden I could speak and comprehend Japanese NOW that is the gift of tongues.
The correct answer came from the youth she was crazy :)
Brother Moreh I am in total agreement here and you know this from the beginning or our conversations. In Acts speaking in tongues was other languages such as Latin, Greek, Hebrew and what ever tongue/dialect was spoken and not some angelic jeberish people make claims to. I have tried to find out when this started because to me it is satanic. I know a lot won't go along with it and that's fine by me. I guess it makes one think of them selves as being above anyone that doesn't. I have a relative that belongs to a religious church (see that thing called religion is taking people to hell) that makes her feel bad or unworthy because she doesn't speak in tongues. So guess what she did, she made herself follow the bank wagon and now she says she speaks in tongue. Can you just imagine a bunch of so called Christians (meaning followers of Christ) in this place all speaking jibberish and nobody understanding anyone else. What is that about?
