Apparently, his resurrected body was not immediately recognizable to his disciples. Mary Magdalene [John 20:14] and the two disciples on the road to Emmaus [Luke 24:16] didn't recognize him immediately either. Of course, I'm not really answering your question, because I haven't a clue why people couldn't recognize him. Interesting question, though.

LOL...... Very interesting it is!

I believe because they walked in their flesh.  The carnal man cannot understand or know the things of God.  When Jesus died, the disciples went back to fishing the natural way.  They stopped fishing for men.  With this, it tells me they went back to their old ways and wasn't able to recognize the things of God.

I can't say your view is totally wrong, but I do think the answer is deeper than them being in their flesh. It could very well be part of the answer. but not the core of the answer.

We know with God, all things are possible.  When we as Christians walk in the Spirit of God, our hope is in God's word.  We're walking in the unknown, naturally so.  This is why I mention.  If they were walking in the Spirit of God, they would have expect the unexpected.  God does the unknown but only to those who believe with expectations.

Going to the other side?  It is not an easy task.  You have to get past friends, family, enemies, critics, generational curses, self, circumstances, etc.  Sooner or later you are going to have to start trusting and putting your faith in God.

Matthew 14:25, "And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea."  The biblical number four symbolizes the earth (creation).  We find the waves and wind contrary.  The Greek word for contrary metaphorically symbolizes the opposition (hostility) of an adversary.

When the prince of the power of the air begans to blow against you with wave after wave, blow after blow, don't be dismayed, if God told you to go to the other side he will see that you get to where you are supposed to be.  Remember that the fourth watch began at 6:00 a.m.  The number six is used to signify the constant battle between the flesh (natural) and the spirit (supernatural).

Many times we will give our adversary and enemies to much praise for what they are doing.  We will not be able to recogonize and see that God is in control.  Be of good cheer (courage), the Lord will see you through to the other side.

Fear changes perception.  You should already know this as a minister?  I believe that scientist will also support this assertion.  I am sure that you can find plenty of books to read about the psychological effects of fear.  Matthew 14:27, "But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid."  Fear will keep you from going to the other side.  Fear will keep you from seeing God.

But what if not being able to recognize him caused the fear, instead of fear causing them not to recognize him? It says they saw him and perceived him to be a spirit/ghost...... and then they cried out for fear.

Immediately after 9-11, and you saw a dark complexion man wearing a kippah, you would see him as a terrorist.  You would think first and ask questions later.  You would not see Jesus.  The preceding events had an impact on their perception.

But we're familiar with terrorists and their capabilities, and our knowledge of terrorists influence fear. They weren't familiar with people walking on water.

I don't believe that the disciples were familiar with any of the multiple miracles that Jesus performed to include the miracle of walking on water unless of course the supernatural event was performed on more than one occasion.  Casting out demonic spirits are one of those reoccurring supernatural events  that Jesus performed prior to walking on the water.

I believe that the disciples understood that they were in the midst of a demonic storm.  I also believe that you are also able to perceive when the devil is working against whatever it is that you are trying to accomplish.  Matthew 14:26, "And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear."

I believe that you have answered your own question when you state, "...and our knowledge of terrorists influence fear."  I believe that the disciples knowledge of demonic spirits also influenced their inability to perceive Jesus walking on the water.  Fear changes the way you (perceive) see things.  The moral of this lesson would be greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.  Fear not only believe.

Matthew 14:24, "But the ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary."  I believe that the disciples had enough presence of mind to know that the storm was contrary (meaning - not of God) to the charge given by Jesus.  Go to the other side.  I am open to your synopsis and opinion in this instance.
