There has been some disingenuous discussion over the timing of Jesus' death, burial and rez.  Some have tried to confuse and refute the bible's credibility by asking, "If the Bible is true and accurate, how do you explain Jesus being crucified on Friday and Rez on Sunday, this according to my math is not three days and 3 nights therefore your Bible is inaccurate and contradictory".

Folks don't buy into this kind of faulty, disingenuous thinking.  People who make such statements  attempting to undermine the faith must think that they are the only one's who can do research. To get 3 days and 3 nights from Friday to Sunday is not difficult if one understands Jewish culture which these folks should be aware of (That's why I consider this question disingenuous).  Let me say again, When doing inductive Bible study, you MUST consider CONTEXT!!!!  Context is king.  Regarding the question of 3 Days and 3 Nights an understanding of Jewish cultural context is important.  Here is how 3 Days and 3 nights come from a Friday to Sunday Death, burial and Rez.

John Wesley in His commentary writes, "...It was customary with the eastern nations to reckon any part of a natural day of twenty - four hours, for the whole day. Accordingly they used to say a thing was done after three or seven days, if it was done on the third or seventh day, from that which was last mentioned. Instances of this may be seen, 1Kings 20:29; and in many other places. And as the Hebrews had no word to express a natural day, they used night and day, or day and night for it. So that to say a thing happened after three days and three nights, was with them the very same, as to say, it happened after three days, or on the third day. See Esther 4:16; 5:1; Gen 7:4,12; Exod 24:18; 34:28. Jonah 2:1."

The People's New Testament writes, "....

Jesus says that he will be raised again the third day (Mt 16:21). Hence, in Jewish usage the third day must mean the same as three days and three nights. It was and is customary with the Orientals to make any part of the day stand for the whole twenty-four hours. Compare Mt 16:21 Mr 8:31 2Ch 10:5 10:12 Es 4:16 Ge 7:4,12 Ex 24:18 34:28:00 A traveler in the East writes:

At length the tenth morning arrived--the tenth morning because, though we performed nominally ten days quarantine, yet it was, really, only eight days. We landed at nine o'clock in the evening of the first day, and were liberated at six o'clock in the morning of the tenth day, but it was held to be ten days according to the custom of the East.''

Christ was buried Friday evening, lay in the grave Saturday, and rose Sunday, parts of three days, rose on the third day, and was in the grave the space of time meant in eastern usage by three days and three nights.

In the heart of the earth. In the sepulcher".

So you see according to an understanding of Jewish culture, Jesus' expression of 3 days and 3 nights is cultural language that we westerners take as literal.  An understanding of context removes many of the barriers to our understanding of apparant contradictions in Scripture.

Interesting,  the days are Yom Echad  or Yom One Yom Two Yom Three....

The man called the Son of G-d/ or the Son of YHVH lived at the time of the Second Temple era....a time when most everything was weighed upon  the concept of Nature/The creator =Seed Time and Harvest principles. those are Absolutes...and guide most of the Festivals (times) Unto the L-rd...as WE see commanded in the Torah and surrounding literature .
EG:The Gemarrah and mid-rash comprising the Talmud..among others.
I believe that those were the Instruments that Your Rabbi taught from...
According to the Jewish Culture it is Absurd that anyone die for the transgressions of another as the Scrolls of Adonai teach that No man dies for the transgressions of another Not the son for the father nor the Father for the Son"~

The yetzer Harah, or the Evil inclination within is what all young Jewish children are taught to control through intellectual study and Self-nullification. Before the Bar Mitzvot 12-13th year]
Everything else is another religion if it is not observing Torah and Mitzvot'  which is the Kabbalah or in layman's terms~" the religion of a man from the Tribe of Judah" The five books of Moshie and the writings and the Navi/ prophets. Which if read in the eyes of the Culture which is through the lens of the wisdom of Kabbalah then one can see clearly the meaning of life and that more abundantly. That is Judaism & Kabballah101 all rolled up into more and more layers of wisdom.

This link may interest you: http://www.come-and-hear.com/talmud/finkelstein.html a historical perspective of the  second Temple times of Jesus/Yeshua and the stories abound with awe.

Lastly this may interest;
Judaism does not demand that everyone convert to the religion. The Torah of Moses is a truth for all humanity, whether Jewish or not.

King Solomon asked God to heed the prayers of non-Jews who come to the
 Holy Temple (Kings I 8:41-43).

The prophet Isaiah refers to the Temple as a "House for all nations."

The Temple service during Sukkot featured 70 bull offerings, corresponding to the 70 nations of the world.

The Talmud says that if the Romans would have realized how much benefit they were getting from the Temple, they’d never have destroyed it.

Jews have never actively sought converts to Judaism because the Torah prescribes a righteous path for gentiles to follow, known as the "Seven Laws of Noah." Maimonides explains that any human being who faithfully observes these basic moral laws earns a proper place in heaven.

Enjoy the journey...

Confused!!!

It was not that hard..Lets see the Temple times were when??? ( First Temple and the Second Temple)
Ok and the "Festivals unto the L-rd are when??? and How many are there to observe?

The Books mentioned are Familiar to your rabbi Jesus so Whats the trouble with today's bible scholars?
Perhaps it is a lack of Historical Linguistic and cultural....comprehension.
G-d forbid that should happen

Brother Todd:

Good post.  I found a little back drop for your post from a Messianic Rabbi blogger that sheds the same light on the issue.   If anyone knows how this transpired historically, its pretty safe to say he would.  I don't fully understand the previous response so I can't comment or add anything to that dialog either pro or con.

There is so much 'red meat' to our faith, scriptures and Jewish 'spiritual' heritage that is yet to be learned by us as Christians.  Its good that God is patient and understanding of us.  Bless you.

Did Jesus resurrect on a Sunday morning?

Q.Did Jesus resurrect on a Sunday morning?

A.To answer that question, we need a little backround. Biblical days start and end at sundown. Yeshua was asked for a sign and the only sign he gave was the sign of Jonah, being in the belly of the great fish 3 days and 3 nightts. This means that Yeshua was going to be in the belly of the earth 3 days and 3 nights. These days are 24 hours. So, let's look at the chronology of this briefly. A more extensive look can be provided into Yeshua's last week, but we'll only look at the part in question.

Yeshua was crucified on Nisan 14, Passover, at 9am (Mk 15.1). Mk 15.33 -34 tells us that he died at 3pm. Now, Mk 15.42 says that it was a preparation day for a High Holy Day, the 15th of Nisan (Lev 23.6) not for the weekly Sabbath. There are 3 Sabbaths during Passover week. This is where many people make a mistake because they do not follow the Torah, but G-d does and so does Yeshua. He is buried by 6pm the 14th (Deut. 21-22-23) and in the grave Thursday the 15th and Friday the 16 th of Nisan until about 6pm. Matt. 28.1 says that it began to "dawn" towards the 1st day of the week.Remember, days start at sundown and the word "dawn" can apply to the moon coming up also. It was a full moon on the 15th so Yeshua comes out of the grave around 6pm as the weekly Sabbath ends.

There is no scriptural evidence for an early Sunday morning at the dawn of the sun resurrection. This is totally based on misunderstanding and paganism. Easter is a name after the the Babylonian goddess of fertility "Ishtar" and the rabbit, eggs, and basket all have sexual connotations to it and the searching for eggs is a fertility rite. Churches will have easter egg hunts and all kinds of pagan practices right along side of all sorts of talk about the resurrection and the death of Yeshua without even noticing what they are doing. I believe they are incapable of discerning the difference because they are dead. These practices should not even be mentioned among people who profess to believe in Yeshua, and maybe that is the issue, they don't believe. So, to answer the question, no, Yeshua was not resurrected on a Sunday morning as taught, but late Saturday afternoon, approximately 6pm. This brings us to several other myths about the crucifixion.

Yeshua did not carry the full cross, but most likey just the cross beam. Wood was to valuable so they used pieces over and over again. Crucifixion was an everyday affair. Pilate crucified 3 people this day, and the next day he probably did 3 more. The upright "stake" was already in the ground and the victim was crucified to the cross beam and then atteached to the upright piece. Another thing, he was not crucified on top of a hill, but along the road to Damascus just outside the gate that bears that name. The scriptures refer to people "passing by" on the road. The romans liked to do that to warn anyone coming into a place, or leaving, what the penalty was for coming against their authority. So, all thoise songs about a hill far away and movies you've seen with it on top of the hill are inaccurate. He was crucified just outside the Damascus gate, as you turn right to go to Damascus, down the road a bit, was the place of execution.

Another myth was he was buried in a shroud. He was wrapped like a mummy(see Lazarus). Linen strips were wound around him, leaving an open space at the face. When he resurrected, the empty cocoon was left behind and when you walked in the tomb, the outline of his body was seen, the linen hardened by the spices 3 days before, but as you approached and looked, there was no face and an empty cocoon of the linen wrappings. That's why the people believed immediately when they entered the tomb and saw they burial place.

Bro. Phil thanks for the interesting article.
