Should a pastor that spends most of his time preaching and teaching get paid for what God has him to do? I know what the scriptures says about this, but would you pastor for free?

well it decree and declre that this isdone
That would be me as well then.....LOL!
Naw, not I! We that operate as Apostles & Prophets quite often are what you describe as "Word of Faith" folks. We also believe in Prosperity from GOD. If you only think of money when saying prosperity, you are giving an incomplete definition of prosperity. We take "SHALOM" to heart.

In fact, you might as well call me a "Bapti-costal"! LOL
The Bottomline is NO!!! Although we can all justify in some way being compensated, but the truth of the matter is GOD shall reward us. Many will say it's foolish but from the beginning was there ever a $$ for preaching the WORD OF GOD? Now if Pastor's are liken unto God & after His own heart, why wasn't Christ Paid? He's the ultimate example for us so what's the discussion. Let's get in the face of God & await His glory to return into our homes, churches & communities even while the scripture are being fulfilled!
SAY AMEN SOMEBODY!
Sorry, but the Church gives no amens to that! LOL!

You said something key here. You said CHRIST was our ultimate example. OK, what did our Good Shepherd say in Mark 10:29-30, and Matthew 10:10?
Yes ,pastors should be paid a salary especially ,if it's there lively hood. [ only source of income]. I have been pastoring about two years ,I have yet to take or get a salary. The church nor I have gone hungry or missed a meal. we, i and the church trust God for All , repeat All of our needs
I know you know, Pastor Lorenzo, but I simply must reiterate what the scriptures say on this matter for we know nothing except it be revealed to us from God.

1Co 2:11 For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.

This is my understanding of scriptures on this matter:

1Co 9:9 For it is written in the law of Moses, Thou shalt not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treadeth out the corn. Doth God take care for oxen?
1Co 9:10 Or saith he it altogether for our sakes? For our sakes, no doubt, this is written: that he that ploweth should plow in hope; and that he that thresheth in hope should be partaker of his hope.

The Word of God is actually using this verse as a parable or example to enlighten the understanding, just as Jesus did in all his parables. That if God cares about the care oxen in this parable, which are used to work hard in the field for you so that you may eat, surely He cares about the care of his ministers or servants who "tread out the corn" who labor in the Gospel to preach his Word to feed the souls of men, who are of more value than oxen.

1Co 9:11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?

Again, they who labor in the Gospel to sow spiritual things, which are eternal, into your soul so that you may grow and be edified (built up) spiritually and strengthened for your daily walk are entitled to compensation for the work which God has charged them to do. It should not be such a great thing if they reap carnal things as a compensation. Carnal "things" do not always come in money alone.

Compensation can come in the form of gifts, privileges, etc. People will give in many ways. God has also said, "Go ye also into the vineyard, and whatsoever is right I will give you." (Mat 20:4)

God has promised us that "if we go" into the vineyard and work, that He will give us "whatever is right". This implies to me that He will meet our needs if we work.

The scriptures further say, "Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, and shaken together, and running over, shall MEN give into your bosom. For with the same measure that ye mete withal it shall be measured to you again."

Men shall give. God uses men (people) to fulfill this promises. God's Love is unconditional, His promises are not. Giving is the way to receiving, whatever form that giving may come in, whoever we may be. Here is another analogy based on the scripture above: If we work eight hours, we get paid for eight hours. With the same measure we mete out "it shall be measured to us again." We have to work to get paid.

But also I am saying ministers of the Gospel have to give both spiritually as well as naturally to follow the principles of God's Word for receiving.

Further, the Word states the following:

1Co 9:7 Who goeth a warfare any time at his own charges? who planteth a vineyard, and eateth not of the fruit thereof? or who feedeth a flock, and eateth not of the milk of the flock?
1Co 9:13 Do ye not know that they which minister about holy things live of the things of the temple? and they which wait at the altar are partakers with the altar?
1Co 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel
Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel. (1Co 9:14)

It is no sin nor should it be an offense to anyone that they which preach should also live of the Gospel for God has ordained it to be so.

However, on the other hand it is also not disallowed for them who preach the Gospel to work in order that the Gospel would be furthered. Paul put it like this:

1Co 9:6 Or I only and Barnabas, have not we power to forbear working?

Forbear: 1) to refrain or abstain from; desist from, 2) to keep back; withhold from.

1Co 9:11 If we have sown unto you spiritual things, is it a great thing if we shall reap your carnal things?
1Co 9:12 If others be partakers of this power over you, are not we rather? Nevertheless we have not used this power; BUT SUFFER ALL THINGS, LEST we should hinder the gospel of Christ.

I KNOW somebody ain't gonna like this!

1Co 9:14 Even so hath the Lord ordained that they which preach the gospel should live of the gospel.
1Co 9:15 But I have used NONE of these things: neither have I written these things, that it should be so done unto me: for it were better for me to die, than that any man should make my glorying void.
1Co 9:16 For though I preach the gospel, I have nothing to glory of: for necessity is laid upon me; yea, woe is unto me, if I preach not the gospel!
All that is left to be said is "AMEN! - "so let it Be"!
Amen Evangelists! People on here had the nerve to say "Pastoring is not a job". I truly doubt that any of them ever had to Pastor at the level of work GOD calls for.
Should a Pastor, Pastor for free, is interesting because it is topical. Meaning that it is almost a backlash to the few (very few) megachurch Pastors. My simple answer is if he can afford to and it is his suggestion, yes. I would hate to apply for a job and be asked to be on call 24-7, daily visits and all for free, however, if I have my own money (that means I am already rich and my family will not suffer) then it is acceptable.
Pastoring is more than a job, it is a lifestyle. A covenant relationship Relationships are built and expectations made. Nowhere will you find that scripture supports the crys and hysteria of the public. I say, if a Pastor has built a church to a multidimential, multifaceted facility, then give the leader their due. Nowhere else is this questioned except in the church. We give all day to sports and an hour to God, and to his people even less. Stop asking the question. It is moot.
It never ceases to amaze me that Christians who are commanded to love one another seem to want to stop short of giving that love and honor to the Pastor. Christians talk a good faith, but we seem to sorely lack the action of faith and love. "We love you brother Pastor, but we don't think we ought to compensate you for the hours you spend in counseling, in visiting the sick no matter the level of sickness, even Sis Martha who has the flu expects a visit and some chicken soup!, no matter that you preach and teach 4 days a week; you shouldn't be compensated for doing any of the funerals; or weddings, well maybe $20 will suffice, you don't live that far from the church so gas shouldn't be that much; you don't need to be compensated for losing your job because its was impossible to keep leaving work to see about members who have become angered because you kept trying to put them off til late evenings after work... once you were even accused of being the reason someone died, because they died of sadness that you didn't get there when you were summoned... why should you be compensated for doing what you're suppose to do. You say you need to study? Study for what you should already know everything when you get up in front of the congregation..

Compensated, ridiculous... it doesn't take all that to preach, anybody can do it, its just talking and maybe looking up some Scriptures. .Compensation,...sadly there are more pastors who are not treated with the same compassion, respect and care that they give their members. God has always been a God of fairness. He didn't discrimenate and say every servant but Pastors are worthy of their hire. Pastors embody the true image of servanthood. Can you imagine if pastors became consultants.. imagine what the invoice would look like!!! ;)
