A former sports star who's fallen on hard times starts coaching his son's soccer team in an attempt to get his life together.
Director: Gabriele Muccino
Writer: Robbie Fox
Stars: Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel and Dennis Quaid
Romantic comedy genre is a very forgiving place for performers and filmmakers. Rom-coms are relatively cheap to produce, and like horror films (which are far cheaper) they usually get a guaranteed audience on opening weekend, so it’s not uncommon to see actors and actresses on the downward slide in Hollywood find a home there. (The reverse works too, with actors on the rise getting a bump from a successful but otherwise low-key rom-coms.)
The point is it’s always interesting to see who turns up in a romantic comedy that hits theaters with no expectations.
George (Gerard Butler) was a big time soccer (the football kind) player once upon a time, but an ankle injury saw an end to his career and his stardom. His family also fell by the wayside at some point, but now he’s moved to the same town as his wife Stacie (Jessica Biel) and son Lewis (Noah Lomax) in the hopes of reconnecting with them both. He’s working towards a sportscasting career but takes a gig coaching Lewis’ soccer team while he waits for a call from ESPN.  George tries to rekindle a life with his wife and son, but his recurring reckless behavior, the horn-dog soccer moms and Stacie’s Baxter of a fiance (James Tupper) may just derail his dream.

Gerard Butler, Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid hit the big screen this weekend in "Playing for Keeps," a romantic comedy about a washed-out soccer star, played by Butler, who returns home to get his life in order. He ends up coaching his son's soccer team, and while doing so, faces a few challenges and has to balance the "soccer moms" who pursue him.
In the early scenes, Butler makes George an endearing wreck of a man, and you're set up to expect a sports-movie redemption for him: Bad News Bears with a brogue. But the movie forgets about the soccer team, and focuses much more attention on the soccer moms. Judy Greer, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Uma Thurman play desperate-housewife variations — a crying divorcee, a seductive ex-sportscastress, a daffy trophy wife. None of them can keep their hands off George. They flirt with him; they open their souls to him; they try to find him a job; at one point, one of them climbs uninvited into his bed and starts stripping off her clothes.
Gerard Butler spreads his bets across the board when it comes to picking movie roles. The 43-year-old actor has been successful in action/beefcake/warrior movies such as 300 and Law Abiding Citizen. He’s done a musical (The Phantom of the Opera), voice work in children’s films (Nim’s Island, How to Train Your Dragon), and even a couple of dramatic classics (The Cherry Orchard, Coriolanus). And then there are movies like Playing for Keeps, aimed at female admirers who have shown a fondness for the rumpled, handsome Scotsman with the notable burr.
