Is it a fancy way of getting the Dr. title without having to put in the work?

lol - I believe that in some cases it is. :) But, in theory it is supposed to be a degree conferred upon somebody in recognition of "doctoral" level accomplishments made in their field. In an of itself, under these guidelines, it could and can be an honorable thing, but many "bad apples" have worked on ruining the credibility of them by offering them at a price. Even some of the mainstream schools (regionally accredited) have, in my opinion, cheapened them because they often only are offering them to people who are able to make significant financial contributions to their school, such as stars, high-level politicians, etc.

It gets me though, when I see so many of us ministers trying to make a big deal out of being called doctor (getting a nasty attitude when someone simply addresses them as Pastor ____ instead of Dr ____) when they simply have received an Honorary degree. It's cool and all, but the ego can stay home. I guess though, that is also the same for any other titles. If your name is still truely your name, why get offended if someone fails to say your title? That's another subject though.

The true value of an honorary doctorate degree is more found in the person who has it than in or of the degree itself.
Well put!
What do you mean by man-made titles?
