Who/what do we resemble?
John 8:41a “You are doing the things your own father does.” 42.a “Jesus said to them, “If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came from God and now am here.” 44a “You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father’s desire.” 47 “He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God.”

When I was growing up and my family came together I often heard the phrase, “You look just like your mother”… especially from family members who we haven’t seen in a long time…
During the holidays my family came together and celebrated Christmas. One of the things that were often said about my two daughters is, “they look just like me”… I have a cousin who son looks just like him and acts just like him… many of us had it said to us when we did something wrong, “You act just like your father…” Here in the text we have the Sanhedrin pleading their cause as to who they belong… They argued their family resemblance all the way back to Abraham… After listening to their arguments and their rhetoric, Jesus does a cross examination… If you were Abraham’s children, ye would do the works of Abraham… Jesus then goes on to say, “Ye do the deeds of your father…” in other words when I look at you I see your father in you…

In our day to day walk, who do we resemble?

When the world looks at us preachers who do they see? Do they see pimps in the pulpit? Do they see wolves in sheep clothing? Do they see mere entertainment? Or do they see a reflection of Christ?

When the world looks at the church who do they see? Do they see a building that never reaches out to the community? Do they see a social club? Do they see a continuance of show time at the Apollo? Do they see a reflection of themselves or a reflection of Christ? Do they see the church in the world or do they see the world in the church?

When our family looks at us who/what do they see? Do they see a person that has bi-polar disorder… one way before them and another way before the world? Do they see hypocrites… who preach well but live terrible? Do they see power hungry infidels who are caught up in self? Or do they see a reflection of Christ?

When our co-workers look at us who/what do they see? Do they see holy rollers who can’t even answer how you’re doing (You know how some do, when asked how they’re doing they reply I’m blessed and highly favored)? Do they see us as unapproachable? Do we remind them why they don’t go to church? Or do they see a reflection of Christ?

In 2009 who do you resemble?
