NEWSLETTER – 12th DECEMBER 2009
We thank God, this week the project started. Funds were available to lease the land, 13 hectares of lush farmland. And the GOOD news regarding Pr Onesmus’s health, he has greatly improved. We thank God for His healing. And we thank the Lord that for sustaining Bashabe, allowing her to carry the extra work load.

Thank you for praying for both Onesmus and Bashabe, and for this farming project. Thank you to those who have supported financially. You will soon see the fruit of your gift.

THE PROJECT SO FAR:
It is amazing how a little bit goes a long way in Africa.

This week, as mentioned, we were able to pay 560,000 UGX ($300 US), which has paid for the lease of the 13 hectares (over 32 acres). That is one sizeable piece of land. That would be about 6 normal sized street blocks.

I’ve asked Pr Onesmus some questions about the project:

Where is it located?
The farm is in Kiruhura District, near Lake Mburo National park. (Find is on the map!)

It is located 5 km from our new DFCM Ophanage, about 40km east of Mbarara and 100 km from Bushenyi, where the church is. You will probably wonder why it is so far from the church?

It is because the land around Bushenyi and Mbarara is densely populated and hence very expensive, but in the Kiruhura District there is much free farmland. Consequently, we are needing to hire labourers to till the land. If the church was closer, the members would be able to work the farm.

In Kiruhura, most of the farmland is used for cattle, so growing crops here will be a real advantage for the region. Along with providing for the needs of our orphanages and for the church, we will be able to sell produce to other farmers here, and sell some at markets in Kampala and Mbarara.

The next step is tilling, and how much will it cost? How is it done, and how long will it take?
The cost for tilling is 780,000 UGX ($410 US). This is what is needed now.

In Uganda, we have teams of workers called diggers who specialise in exactly that, tilling or digging the ground. All the labour in West Uganda is done manually. In East Uganda they do use oxen.

We use hoes, pangas, and forks. It is hard labor. We will need to enguage about 30 tillers to get the farm done by early January.

Tilling is done in two phases. The first phase is clearing the bush, and tilling which runs up to January. The second phase is letting the farm rest a bit, and gets bushy a bit, and then the tillers come the second time, and clean up the farm of the grass dry it up and burn it. This works as manure.

What about planting? When will that start, and what will be planted?
We are going to first plant beans, maize, ground nuts, peas, sweet potatoes., and of course moringa. The planting has to be done at the right time to prevent the crops being subject to pests. The seeds will cost around 750,000 shs (which is included in the overall cost).

What is the remaining cost of the project, and how much is the whole project costing?

The remaining expenses for the project will be about 1,160,000 UGX ($630), which will be extended over the season.

TOTAL COST for the whole season is 2,500,000 UGX ($1340 US), with the expected return being around 7,500,000 UGX ($4000 US).

Since the land we had budgeted for 300000shs went up to 560000sh, the cost could also go up but slightly above 2.5M. But that would fetch much more money than we expected out of the farm. We have been advised to use the proceeds to buy the farm land.

Hopefully, all going as well as we expect, the proceeds of two seasons in a year could buy 4 hectres of cheap land. Lands that are sparcely populated are sold at a cheaper price here in Uganda. But where we live in Bushenyi, 4 hectares would cost over $40,000 USD.

THE PRESIDENTIAL GRANT – If we are chosen for it, when would that happen and how much would it be?
We would expect the presidential grant after seting up the moringa project, or when we prove to be among the large scale farming estates. The grant would be in terms of of seeds, technocrats, and may be some processing machines or a tractor.

What are the greatest needs, and how can we help?
FINANCIAL SUPPORT - As you can see by the figures, we do not need a lot. However, right now, we do need a few people who could fund the initial costs. Please pray and give as the Lord leads. Keep in mind that by supporting this project you will be investing in the self-sufficiency of an entire community.
PRAYER – Oh, of course this is MOST important. We need prayer warriors who will guard our backs (as it were) as we work. Pray for the workers. Pray for the crops. Pray for protection from pests, and from other interferences, whether spiritual, human or beast. Pray for the weather. Pray for the harvest. Pray for God’s blessings!!
PRACTICAL HELP - As some have, you may have skills, knowledge or expertise that could assist us.
PUBLICITY – NETWORKING – By sharing with others about this project, you may be introducing us to God’s appointed people. We are so thankful for those who have given us leads so far. Some have said, “I can’t help, but I know someone who can.” That has opened many doors for us. Thank you!
MISSIONARY VISITS – Please consider a visit to our farm. And this May we are holding a pastor’s conference, which will be held near the project. We still have a few openings for conference leaders and speakers. Maybe the Lord wants you to join us for that? Of course you can come any other time too.
LONG TERM MISSIONARIES – OUR GREATEST NEED!!!!! – We are praying that God will send us missionaries, especially experienced in agriculture, administration and finance. We need someone from outside who can oversee the project, and someone who can administer and manage the finance. This would take much of the load off Pastor Onesmus, freeing him up to preach the Word as the Lord has called him to do.
