PASTOR RICHARD A. YOUNG SPEAKS TO CYBERBULLYING AND THE EVANSTON RATS INCIDENT
April 13, 2010
This is the age of technology. This technology provides vast opportunities for individuals to share information, good or bad to a worldwide audience like never before. This information catches like wildfire because of the swift movement of the web. For example, it is good for business, especially establishing small business and giving them a leg up and enabling them to compete. I use social communities like facebook, twitter, etc., to promote ministry and reach an audience I wouldn’t have been able to reach otherwise. These mediums can be used for good, to promote business, networking, ministry, marketing, etc., but some can also use it with malicious intent. Bullying is not a brand new phenomenon. Big kids have been bullying little kids since Adam and Eve. In times past the damage was not as great. Though it was damaging, I wonder how many lives were lost, and people’s character defamed to the point that the embarrassment is so overwhelming that it is mentally debilitating?
A bully is a quarrelsome person who terrorizes weaker people, one who intimidates or coerces with threats. In times past this may have been physical where the big schoolyard ruffian threatens to beat you up for your lunch money, or for the physically weaker smart kid to do his homework. Today it is not just physical, but mental and social. One can be terrorized in their mind and be socially embarrassed and ostracized. This can be damaging beyond what can be seen on the surface, especially during the tender stage of adolescence. In this age, children are afforded more opportunities and resources to terrorize, threaten and intimidate their peers. Terrorism happens when one feels they have to alter their lives in such a way to survive. Consider the affect 9/11 had on our social conscience. Fear fueled our frantic affinity with war. In the back of our minds the threat level was always on high and it altered our entire lifestyle. This still happens today when one feels at the mercy of another because of the threat of the humiliation they could have heaped upon them.
I am disappointed to hear of the unfortunate and malicious page that points the finger at certain students to scar, embarrass, and even humiliate them socially. My heart goes out to those students who were hurt and embarrassed, and their families. I am especially disappointed that the light has been shone on Evanston, a city with a wealth of resources and rich history. E.T.H.S. is one of the greatest institutions of secondary education with a faculty adorned with degrees like a university faculty. Evanston Township High School sets an academic standard and one would hope a social one too. The message I would like to share with the ones responsible for this “Rats” page and for all who may read this article, I often teach those in our ministry, to whom much is given, much is required. Evanston with its rich educational heritage and its wealth of resources has afforded its children much, and much is required in return. The technology has also afforded a lot of resources and freedom to express ourselves and share what we want to a worldwide audience. With freedom comes responsibility. There is responsibility on both sides. Just as the press is free to interview and report, good journalists know that they have a responsibility to research and qualify that which they report. The online social communities also have a responsibility in setting a standard of conduct on their sites. They also reserve the right to monitor and maintain that standard. As members of the online social communities we have a responsibility to be good members of the sites and good neighbors to one another. Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
