Baptism of the Holy Spirit, Ghost
Rev. Mike Russell
Acts 1:5 -- Acts 2:4
God is holy. I Peter 1:16 Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy. Fact - God alone is holy in Himself.
Peter quoted the Old Testament scripture, which would be familiar to the Jewish Christian in his audience, to
confirm his word.
1.
God is a Spirit. John 4:24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. It is
those who have been born anew by spirit, that have become his children, who can and must worship in the
spirit. It is those who accept the revelation of God in Christ as the ultimate truth - who can and must worship
Him in truth.
o Must means a necessity, a pressing need.
o Worship means to show reverence.
2.
There is only one spirit of God. Ephesians 4:4-6. 4:4 There is one body, and one Spirit, even as ye are called in
one hope of your calling; 4:5 One Lord, one faith, one baptism, 4:6 One God and Father of all, who is above
all, and through all, and in you all. The Holy Spirit is God.
3.
Acts 5:3-4.
5:3 But Peter said, Ananias, why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost, and to keep back part of the
price of the land? 5:4 Whiles it remained, was it not thine own? And after it was sold, was it not in thine own power?
Why hast thou, conceived this thing in thine heart? Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.
I Corinthians 3:16-17
3:16 know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the spirit of God dwelleth in you?
3:17 If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
I Corinthians 6:19-20
6:19 What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye
are not your own?
6:20 For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. Holy
Ghost and Holy Spirit are titles. These titles for God emphasize His holiness and His spiritual nature.
Emphasize means to stress, to force. The new testament associates the Holy Spirit with God's work of
regeneration and his dwelling in man.
Regeneration means to give fresh life, to reorganize, to recreate the moral nature; to cause to be born again; to
change from nature! To a spiritual state.
Dwell means to abide. Abide means to wait patiently for.
Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?
John 3:5 Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again of water and of the spirit, he
cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
John 14:16-17 14:16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you
forever 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him:
but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.
This is a vital New Testament experience with God. The KJV speaks of being "baptized with the Holy Ghost"
Acts 1:5 For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
With comes from the Greek word EN meaning rendered in.
In is a preposition that means within or inside of.
Baptized means plunging or immersing.
The New Testament consists of four divisions.
1. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John - The Gospels.
2. Acts - Church History.
3. Romans to Jude - The Epistles
4. Revelations - Prophesy
The New Testament Church continued to proclaim the baptism of the Holy Ghost as a promise and a command
to all. Peter preached the promise on the day of pentecost with the support of the apostles.
*Support means to hold up, to maintain in position, to prevent from falling.
Acts 2:38 Then peter said unto them, Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the
remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
Paul emphasizes the need of the spirit. Acts 19:1-6
Paul wrote Romans 8:9 But ye are not in the flesh, but in the spirit, if sobe that the spirit of God dwell in you.
Now if any man have not the spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
one means no one, not one, nobody, no part.
Romans 14:17 For the kingdom of God is not meat and drink; but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy
Ghost.
Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness. The sequence is; Righteousness = Peace = Joy. Blessed are those
who hunger and thirst for Righteousness. Blessed are the peacemaker - rejoice and be glad. The kingdom of
God does not consist of talk but of power. So in the Holy Ghost - Spirit is blessing which can already be
enjoyed
