God said to Moses in Exodus 34:2-3, “…Be ready in the morning, and come up in the morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to me in the top of the mount. And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before that mount.”

Our relationship with God is personal. Thank God for the blessings of gathering together with other saints and the power of cooperate prayers but relationship with God cannot be built jointly, it is largely a personal adventure. The Lord said to Moses, “Come alone.” Your greatest moment of encounter in God’s presence will always come when you are alone with Him. God will hardly do spectacular things for you in the midst of a crowd. So, you require a lot of personal discipline in your quest for spiritual encounters, particularly in this very busy world of ours where everybody and everything is calling for your attention.

Moses stayed alone with God and when he returned the Bible says, “…Moses wist not that the skin of his face shone…When Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his face shone; and they were afraid to come nigh him” (Exodus 34:29-30). No other person in scriptures apart from Jesus (at His transfiguration) had such an encounter. But Moses got it because he chose to camp alone with God.

Until Jacob was left alone, God did not visit him. When he was returning from the house of Laban his father-in-law, he heard that Esau, his brother who had vowed to kill him for taking his birthright was coming to meet him. Jacob feared, so that night he sent everybody away and stayed alone with God and as the day was braking he said to the angel that wrestled with him, “I will not let you go except you bless me.” That day his name was changed form Jacob to Israel, from “supplanter” to “Prince.” His destiny took a new turn with just one encounter. As a prince, Jacob commanded favour and respect, so instead of killing him, Esau embraced him (Genesis 32,33).

Jesus also was alone in the wilderness for forty days and forty nights, fasting and praying and at the end of it, the Bible says, He “returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about” (Luke 4:14). You can stay alone with God and not return with a unique encounter.
