Michelle Obama Joins Alpha Kappa Alpha. A must Read
This maybe old news, but it's new news for me.
Are the Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority the only sorority handing out honorary memberships to famous people?
I'm not going to support the First Lady Michelle Obama after hearing about this. I have personal reasons because of a family member belonging to this sorority. For some, life is a struggle and I don't like the way most members look at African American males who are struggling, it's the way a white person would look at a black student who come from a low-income family with free tuition. I'm not going to support Michelle Obama, I know, that doesn't mean much to the Alpha Kappa Alpha or the First Lady, she want hear about it, but just like Alicia Keys after she accepted an invitation to become an honorary member, I haven't brought a CD yet after that. I know my $15.00 bucks don't mean much, but that's my personal choice.
The comments at the bottom of the article tell it all.
I didn’t know this is what highly educated Princeton University lawyers needed to do to make contacts. I thought the alumni network was enough.
Do you suppose it was through her contact with AKA that Michele Obama got her $300k/year job as “Director of Minority Outreach” at a Chicago med center?
Michelle Obama has always stood on her own. Her credentials are stellar and she has made great strides in society.
Why does Michele Obama “need” to join a “Black” sisterhood when she already has the advantages of an elite university’s alumni bank that includes blacks, whites, males, females AND she’s already making $300k/year promoting “diversity?”
Let’s not forget that this same sorority discriminated against its own black people. Specifically, blacks could not join if their skin tone was darker than a brown paper bag. Why would anyone in their right mind want to be associated with such a sorority?
Michelle Obama Joins Alpha Kappa Alpha, a Historically Black Sorority
Michelle Obama has accepted an invitation to become an honorary member of Alpha Kappa Alpha, ending weeks of speculation on historically black college campuses about which, if any, sorority she would join.
Ms. Obama did not join a sorority while a undergraduate at Princeton, and Alpha Kappa Alpha, which was founded at Howard University in 1908, did not have a chapter on the campus at the time.
The sorority, which also counts Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons among its honorary members, told The New York Times that once Ms. Obama is inducted into the sorority, she cannot join any of the other “divine nine,” as black sororities and fraternities are often called.
But a spokeswoman for Ms. Obama said that her membership was non-exclusive.
“She looks forward to working with all of them to help bring change to their communities,” the spokeswoman told the Times.
