Why should you do something that brings in residual income when you are a minister?

Second Corinthians 9:8 says,

“And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work.”

The Word teaches that if we will be good stewards of all that God gives, ready to distribute to help meet the needs of others, God is able to make all grace abound toward us so that we have an abundance. He wants us to have more than security; He wants us to have true financial freedom.

In Deuteronomy 8:18 we read,

“But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.”

God teaches that He does not give us wealth but He gives us the power to create wealth. This requires action on the part of the steward. There are some practical things we must do here, in the now, if we are to see financial success. Tithing and giving are definitely the MAIN two ways to accomplish this.

Can the concept of multiple streams of income be found in the Bible? The answer is yes!

Cast your bread upon the waters, For you will find it after many days. Give a serving to seven, and also to eight, For you do not know what evil will be on the earth. Ecc 11:1-2

In the morning sow your seed, And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper, Either this or that, Or whether both alike will be good. Ecc 11:6

One commentator refers to Solomon’s many ventures – ventures to Ophir for gold, wheat and oil to Lebanon in exchange for cedar and cut stone. Solomon’s fleet of trading ships returning with gold, silver and ivory from Africa. Many different ventures, many projects going at the same time.

When we look at bible examples of people that God blessed with wealth, we can see a pattern. None of them relied on just one job or income stream, they were blessed with wealth in various areas. Either they had several enterprises on the go, or they invested their wealth in several areas that appreciated in value over time.

Abraham was a herdsmen who owned a successful ranch of livestock. The bible records that he was very rich in silver, cattle and gold (Genesis 13:2). Job was recorded to have owned 7,000 sheep, 3,000 camels, 500 yoke of oxen, 500 female donkeys, and a very great body of servants (Job 1:3).

Solomon wrote the wisdom contained within the book of Ecclesiastes and we can certainly learn a thing or two from him. His wealth came from many sources, including:

• His inheritance from his father King David (1 Chronicles 29:23

• Gold, silver and precious gifts received from the kings and queens of distant lands (2 Chronicles 9:1-2, 9)

• Tribute money from countries and kingdoms (1 Kings 4:21, 24)
• Profits he received periodically from investments in commerce and trading (1 Kings 9:26-28) (1 Kings 10:22-23)
• Various gifts he received on a yearly basis from visitors who came just to listen to his wisdom (1 Kings 10:24-25)

God is our Provider and ultimate source of true, lasting wealth. In His Word He has given us principles by which to live by and prosper on this earth. Diversifying our investments, scattering our seeds and varied business ventures are all biblical keys to channeling multiple streams of income.

God established the key to financially flourish is to have multiple streams of income. When He created the Garden he created a watering system that guaranteed sustenance. The main stream broke off into four directions causing multiple streams of income, each one having its own specific advantages.

1. Pishon means increase. This is where commodities were found - gold, onyx, and resin, the earliest forms of currency. This river represents financial income and funding sources. Most business fail because of a shortage of capital.

2. Gihon means revelation. This is a stream of ideas, witty inventions, and concepts. This river represents intellectual properties, creativity, and knowledge. One idea can give you an income the rest of your life.

3. Tigris means rapid. This river represents energy. The ability and strength to accomplish the job. You need power and momentum in business.
4. Euphrates means fruitfulness. Euphrates represents harvest. Bearing fruit is the key to having sustained wealth. Results matter. In business, you must have a profit.

In order to have a flourishing lifestyle, you must have diversity of income. Notice that four sustaining rivers came from the main source. Typically, your diversity will come from one main source of income.
