"The Wilderness"

The "wilderness", an open area lacking cities and towns.... a desert. The children of Israel wondered in the "wilderness" for forty years after being delivered out of Egypt. Isaiah prophesied in the "wilderness". John the "baptist" preached in the "wilderness". Jesus was led by the spirit into the "wilderness" to be tempted. What significance does the "wilderness" have in scripture?
