I've always wondered whether or not the word "prophet" was ALWAYS someone who spoke of "future" events or was it also one who was a "spokesperson" for God (YHVH)??

Weren't the OT prophets known to REBUKE the conduct of kings or nations and/or predict future events?

Isn't a prophet a "messenger" FROM God who speaks not his own words but the words of God?? Are ALL of God's words predictive prophecy or the foretelling of future events or does God also correct as well as comfort… with His words spoken by those He chooses? Am I saying everyone is a prophet… oh of course not but…

The kinds of prophecy fall under two divisions; predictive and didactic. Predictive prophecy is a communication from God, spoken by a prophet revealing acts or events that will take place in the future.

Didactic prophecy is a communication from God spoken by a prophet (spokesperson of God ), revealing instructions or teachings of God.

IN THE OLD TESTAMENT

PROPHET
Hebrew masculine noun nabiy'

A spokesperson or messenger who gives forth (proclaims) information resulting from a direct communication from God.

IN THE NEW TESTAMENT

PROPHECY
Greek feminine noun prophēteia

a discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden; esp. by foretelling future events

Does anyone else have an answer to the question... What is a Prophet?

Thanks for asking this question, as many do not know what a true prophet of the Most High does. All I see in the Scripture is that they call people back to the Ways of the One True and Living God of the universe Yahweh. And they speak what Father gives them to announce to people who are wayward in a warning to return to His Commandments. The prophets were there all through Scripture to keep people in line with Yahweh's Ways.Father spoke to them and they spoke to the leaders, and some cases such as with Elijah he confronted prophets of other gods to make known the truth to Who is the One True and Living Yah.

Please read:
I would just like to make a brief comment about the call of prophecy. In Numbers 11:29 the Scripture speaks, "Then Mosheh said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Oh, that all the people of יהוה were prophets, that יהוה would put His Spirit upon them!” Yehoshuah went running to Mosheh asking Mosheh to stop Eldad and Meydad who were not called openly from prophesing, but Mosheh confirmed before hand that Yah's Spirit would be poured out and the two sons that were not called to participate around the Tent of Meeting were prophesing in the camp telling us that Father's Ruach Kodesh (Holy Spirit) was in more places than one. The thing that I find consistant in every case that true prophecy was going forth in Scripture was when the Spirit of the Almighty Yah Most High rested upon them. This is what we are all supposed to be called to, because true prophets call the people of Yah to retrun and make teshuva to the Torah and to the Ways of the One True and Living Yah of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. We know that there are and will be false prohphets because the Scriptures speak of them, deceiving people, and you are correct, isn't that what is going on today?

Let us all be called to have the Spirit of Yah rest upon us, so that we will prophesy the Truth of the Torah to the nations:

Joel 2:28 “And after this it shall be that I pour out My Spirit on all flesh. And your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men dream dreams, your young men see visions.

In this Scripture the word Flesh is Basar which means more than 'flesh' it relates more to 'blood relations' or 'kindred' so when Yah says all flesh he is speaking of the sons and daughters of Father Abraham who have the Spirit of the Most High in them and then sons and daughters of the Torah will prophesy to the nations. And just as Eldad and Meydad some will be in the outer boundaries of the earth and others will see and not beleive that they are called because it seems they are not of the sons and daughters, but they too have the Spirit of the Almighty upon them.

All true prohpets call the people back to the Torah/Commandments, not to cars, fine houses and such, these things you can have by your own work.

Shalom
Wasn't Aaron called Moses' prophet?

Exodus 7:1
And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet.

And what about Miriam???

Exodus 15:20
And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

So these two siblings were representing whom? Who were they the spokespersons of as being called prophet/prophetess?
Thank you for sharing with us Rabbi Byers.
Has anyone noticed in the New Testament the Greek word "apostolos" - from which our word Apostle is derived similarly means:

a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders

Am I saying that they are one in the same? No, not really, just sharing some definitions.
