The question about whether Christian women should wear pants or slacks is an issue that is raised about externals when the life of the child of God should rather be about a spiritual relationship based upon our position in Christ as believers. The obedience of a child of God is not measured by what clothing we wear but by our walk in the Spirit (Galatians 5:16).
When looking at “doubtful things," we need to use Scripture in context for the principles that will help us walk as believers, which means considering the dispensation and the whole counsel of God and not taking passages out of context. There is a passage in the Old Testament that speaks about a woman wearing men's clothing: "A woman must not wear men's clothing, nor a man wear women's clothing, for the LORD your God detests anyone who does this" (Deuteronomy 22:5). The context of this passage is the second giving of the law to the nation of Israel as they were poised to enter the Promised Land. Deuteronomy 22:5 is an admonition not to live as a transvestite. This has to do with more than just clothing; it also speaks of a life that emulates in every way those of the opposite sex. Transvestitism was a practice of the Canaanites, and Israel was to consider it an abomination. We take a principle from this and apply it to our lives as believers, but we must use it in the context in which it is given and do so in relation to the dispensation of grace.
The Apostle Paul wrote extensively on the difference between the law and grace in Romans. We are not justified by our adherence to the law, but we are justified by faith in Christ (Romans 3:21-28). The believer in Christ Jesus is "dead" to the constraints of the law. "But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code" (Romans 7:6). Therefore, a believer does not live by legalism, nor by license, but rather by grace.
What has that to do with a believing woman wearing pants? There is no biblical law that says what a woman should wear or not wear. Rather, the issue is one of modesty. Paul addresses the modesty of women in his first letter to Timothy. "I also want women to dress modestly, with decency and propriety, not with braided hair or gold or pearls or expensive clothes, but with good deeds, appropriate for women who profess to worship God" (1 Timothy 2:9-10). The Greek word translated "modest" is the Greek word kosmios, which is translated twice in the New Testament, once as "modest" in this passage and once as "of good behavior" in 1 Timothy 3:1. It came to mean "well-arranged, seemly, and modest."
Even if you look at Deuteronomy 22:11, it talks about not wearing clothing mixed of different fabrics (wool and linen) and that also served as an abomination. This chapter was talking about laws of separation and the gender of pants was one of the things that the Israelites were to uphold as a standard not to be conformed to other nations and to remain separate. My perspective is this, if women shouldn't wear pants then all our clothing should be 100 % cotton, linen, or wool. Until we stop approaching the Bible with this pre-embedded theology and pre-conceived notions of the word of God we will always be bound by something that was spoken to make us free. I hope I shed some light to your answer. -Prophet My'chal T. WIlkins
First and foremost, All these excuses and reasons for or against wearing pant's if you are a women, are just that "EXCUSES" it doesn't matter if your for or against. I've been patient and sat back and reading all the emails everytime someone comments on this thread. Some call yourselves Pastor, some Preacher, Bishop, Prophet, Prophetess, on and on and on. We seem to have puffed up ourselves up, all high and mighty on here with our words of wisdom as though GOD needs us to answer for him. This is the problem with our Churches today, we tell GOD to move over and let me answer this one for you. Turn on your TV and look at what the world is seeing as the modern day Church, we have Men and Women dressed in their scarlett overthrows with all this fine jewelry hanging about their necks acting like you can't go directly to GOD without going through me first, acting all holier than thou, they spend enough on the pulpit to feed 150 hungry children, then you come on a site such as this one, only to read accusations and inneundos of different interpretations. If you go back and read this thread from the beginning and number all the old testament reasons against women wearing pants to Church, perhaps you would think, we truely are ignorant. Is this what a piece of paper from the internet gets you or an education from a school of higher learning, I think not. GOD doesn't call the qualified, he qualifies the called. For us to inject our small portion of infinite wisdom, is actually driving folks away from the Church. Geez, I've even read about RACE in this thread, we had better be getting our selfs out of the way and let the Lord lead us or we will all end up in the ditch. You know, the "blind leading the blind", we had better be examing ourselves. If I were a lost person or unchurched and came on here and read this, I wouldn't want anything to do with any of us.
In closing, someone correct me if I'm wrong, when Jesus and his disciples were seen plucking and eating the corn in the field on the sabbath, just what does that mean to YOU. Did Jesus not do away with the old law? We now live under GRACE, you know, love GOD and Love your Neighbor. If we don't LOVE our Neighbor, then how can we love GOD. Let's stop trying to put Jesus back on the Cross, the saviour I worship and Love would want and require we love all our sheep, regardless of how they look and wear.
I'm just a simple undersheperd for a mighty King, he made me a fisher of men, all I have to do is catchem, he does all the cleaning. Amen, Amen, Amen
Well, I would love to keep writing, because theres so much to say on this subject, but I have to get ready for Sunday morning baptizing at the river, because they were saved at our revival. They are now in line to recieve a new ROBE and CROWN. The only pair of clothing that matters.......
