Taming Angry Christians

Russell Moore, Dean of the School of Theology at Southern Seminary (SBTS), tactfully and lovingly rebukes those Christians who find more to hate, gripe and inveigh about the culture than to engage the culture to transform it for Jesus Christ. Dr Moore is no diluter of the Gospel and his Evangelical and conservative bona fides are manifest given his position in one of the more conservative centers of higher learning in one of the more conservative Christian denominations (SBC).

Two Miracles

Today I had the privilege of visiting two saints at two different hospitals. I am intentional in the use of the term "privilege" because once again I saw the miracle working power of God at work. What a blessing I experienced.

They couldn't be much different. Or so it seemed. One a man, the other a woman. One a Baptist, the other a Seventh Day Adventist. One with a virtual army of familial support, the other very much a loner. Two different hospitals. Two individuals who had come… Continue

On Laying Up Treasure

I couldn't resist the title.

The Associated Press* reports a story of an Israeli woman desperately trying to recover an old mattress she put out for garbage collectors, because, she claims, her entire life's savings (all $1 million or so) had been stuffed into the mattress. Until My Elevation Comes

When did we start thinking of ministry in terms of "promotion", "elevation", or upward mobility? Whatever happened to the original concept of the minister as "servant"?

One of our dear brothers on BPN has been kind enough to send us these messages soliciting applications for "elevation" to the office of bishop. How Readest Thou?

A few of the recent discussions on BPN set me thinking. There is the person who believes he has discovered the Holy Grail of Biblical scholarship with a copy and paste list of what he thinks are the proper names and titles of God. Then there is the discussion on the necessity or sufficiency of academic preparation for the ministry.

In all this one thing becomes clear: inadequately prepared or untrained individuals usually are the most pontifical in their disputations. They seek to… Continue

Father Forgive Them

A few weeks ago I was invited to be one of seven pastors and ministers speaking on the 7 Last Words (so-called) of Jesus. I was asked to speak on the first statement:Father Forgive Them for they know not what they do" (Lk 23:34).

It was one of those experiences where the Scriptures come alive in new ways and with fresh revelations and perspective, even though I had studied, preached and taught on this text numerous times. I'd like to share a few thoughts that this text commends to… Continue
