Ephesians 6:11-17
(King James Version)
It has been said that Paul was looking at a Roman soldier when he wrote this letter to the Ephesians.
11) Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. 12) For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. 13) Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. 14) Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; 15) And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
“having your loins girt about with truth”
Literally - To “girt” your loins is to tie your tunic between your legs and around your waist for protection from falling.
Spiritually –Paul is saying for us (Christians) to secure ANYTHING that will cause us to stumble and fall while on the battlefield for the Lord.
“the breastplate of righteousness”
Literally- a breastplate is worn to protect ones vital organs.
Spiritually – Paul is saying our own righteousness is NOTHING, completely worthless in this battle. We need to get our eyes off of SELF and back on the provision of the cross and the righteousness that is ONLY found in a relationship with Jesus Christ.
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;”
Literally- Roman soldiers wore sandals with thick leather soles with small nails in the bottom for stability.
Spiritually- Paul is saying that our preparation for battle IS the gospel. The life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
16) Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
Literally- Shields were used during battle for individual protection.
Spiritually- We should trust in the gospel and Christ as our shield. We can NOT rely on our own shields in THIS battle.
17) And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:
“And take the helmet of salvation”
Literally- Used in battle to protect the head and face.
Spiritually- This is our source of TOTAL deliverance. In JESUS we can find deliverance in EVERY situation whether that be mentally, emotionally, physically or spiritually. He is our source, our guide and our way out because we can NOT deliver ourselves!.
“and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”
Literally – Swords were used for thrusting (Stabbing) in battle. Most effective when used from a short distance
Spiritually- Our sword is THE WORD OF GOD. Keep it close (in your heart). Know that this is NOT “one” sword, but many. Looking at the Bible as ONE sword limits us and weakens us. The Greek word used in the original text was “hrema”, meaning “in word, utterance” or in English “saying”. Instead of ONE sword, we are equipped with THOUSANDS of Swords! EACH , particular relevant scripture is a sword in itself and VERY effective in battling the enemy!
Example: In Matthew 4:2 Jesus was tempted by the enemy saying “If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be bread. Jesus’ responded with a SWORD/ the word saying (Deuteronomy 8:3) “It is written,Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
HOPEFULLY, We’re all ready for battle!!
Be blessed.
