So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.
Genesis 12:4
All Abraham knew was that God said, “Pack up and start heading in this direction. I will show you where you will go.” Too often, people want God to tell them everything about how His will plays out. They want to see the steps before they will move. They want all of their questions answered. Abraham, however, stepped out “by faith” (see Hebrews 11).
When God calls, you have to make a decision that you are going trust God with your life even when you don't know what you are going to do or where you are going to go. After I accepted the call of the ministry at age 18, I became the youngest Elder or Ordained Minister in the denomination at that time.
Soon after, one day while praying, the Lord told me to go to Bible school. In the mid-1970s, God called a young African-American man to go to Broken Arrow, Oklahoma, which might as well have been called the Land of Canaan to me. I didn't even know where Oklahoma was at that time, but I was pretty sure it was next to California!
Abraham set out because he heard God's voice telling him where to go. God will only show you one step to take. You have to take that before He will show you the next one, or you won't be walking by faith. Instead, you will be walking by a road map!
Prayer for Today
Father,
Thank you for calling me. In faith, I listen for, receive, and respond to your call, one day at a time, and one step at a time. I magnify your name for your amazing faithfulness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
