Seeking God's Face
And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
Genesis 12:7
The Lord appeared to Abraham and started giving him instructions as the man spent time before God. That's exactly what I did when I was a young minister. Every evening when I came home from work, I crawled under the dining room table to seek the face of God. When I accepted God's call, I was saying, “I will be whatever you want me to be and do whatever you want me to do.” I gave up all my dreams, including my dream of being a lawyer. I gave up all my desires. I sought the face of God.
There was opposition. My wife had nine brothers and three sisters, and she'd never been outside Detroit. Plus, we had the first grandchild, and there was no way they were going to let him live that far away. I had a decision to make. Was I going to allow family to keep me from obeying God, or not? Again, the pressure was intense. The first time I told my wife that we were going to Oklahoma, she said, “I tell you what. You go ahead and go, and I'll stay here with our son. We'll be here when you get back.”
I said, “No. No.” I went back to God. “Look, you said in your Word that my wife and I are one. I am not leaving without her, so you have to talk to her.” I meant it, too.
A couple of days later, she started praying and came back to me and said, “The Lord said to me that not only had He spoken to you but also that I was never to question you about anything you said that God told you.” And she hasn't to this day. By the way, she enrolled in Bible school and graduated with me. That's how much God changed that situation!
Prayer for Today
Father,
My heart's desire is to be a man or woman who seeks and follows your will. Thank you for drawing me to you. I am your servant, looking to you in every situation. In Jesus' name, Amen.
