John 4:23-24 says, “The hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in Spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him. God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”
True worship only occurs in “the spirit.” You must come to God in complete sincerity and with a spirit that is directed by the life and activity of the Holy Spirit. When you worship, it must take place according to the truth of the Father that is revealed in the Son and received through the Spirit. Jesus said in John 3: 6, “That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit.” And Philippians 3:3 says, “For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.” You cannot worship without the truth which is the Word of God. John said in John 1:1, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” And Jesus said in John 14:6, “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” The true believer desires, seeks, and expects to experience all the elements found in worship as did the early church. A worshipper must be hungry; Jesus said in Matthew 5:6, “Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled.” If you are not hungry for all that God is and chasing after Him, you are spiritually dead; because your hunger has been destroyed by worldly anxieties, deceitfulness of riches, desires for things and worldly pleasures, and failure to abide in Christ. The Father is seeking for true worshippers--Have you ever panted after Jesus?
