15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature
Mark Chapter 16:15 is the commission of Christ to his disciples. Men and women throughout the centuries have proclaimed God called me to preach; if you ask them what were you called to preach the answer would be," The gospel."
The apostle Paul wrote:1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received , and wherein ye stand ; 2 By which also ye are saved , if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain. 3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received , how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; 4 And that he was buried , and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures. 1Cor15:1-4 in these verses the apostle Paul is defining exactly what the gospel is and by his exclusion what the gospel is not. The church puts much emphasis on the great commission and yet We are not doing the great commission. For Most the great commission is baptism and in many cases even the mode of baptism is off thereby nullifying the words of Christ and reducing his words to mere ritual. The Mission or Mandate of the church is to evangelize the world. See Matthew 28:19 Mark 16:15
The method of preaching in the African American church has long been the call and the response commonly known as "the whoop." as a young preacher I came up under one of the best. I loved that style of preaching and still do However I was concentrating on " the whoop" and I associated "the Whoop" with the anointing if a man or woman was not whooping they were not anointed in my mind. Culture can be a handicap to the gospel if one is not careful. You will preach the gospel through the filter of your culture; cultural taboo becomes sin, while it may not be sin in Gods eyes. the sin is in your eyes and your message becomes a message of bondage and legalism.
For example American culture in the 50's dictated that a woman that wore silk stockings was a loose woman. During that time one of our apostles began to preach that the woman should dress as becoming holiness; Holiness to him was cotton stockings, long dresses and nappy heads. He equated holiness with clothes. If you are not careful you will be preaching what you call holiness and its nothing more than a movement founded and established in the traditions of men. Holiness is a standard of God that we must attain through the gospel; it is the power of God unto salvation. Now If I go to India, china, the Sudan that message can not be received and it would be oppressive to the women that tried to obey that message. The Gospel is good news and glad tidings to modern man. What is the good news that Christ came to set us free from sin and death. His death, burial, and resurrection accomplished that. That is the Good News. 6 I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: 7 Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. 8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before , so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received , let him be accursed. 10 For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of b Christ. Galatians 1:6-10 Paul the apostle writing to the church of Galatia and in verse six he says He is amazed at the church of Galatia because they had been removed from Christ. how were they removed from Christ because they added to the Gospel. Paul called it a perverted gospel. how was the gospel perverted? because the Jews were trying to add circumcision to the gospel message. They were preaching death burial and resurrection but when it came time to respond to the message they would instruct the respondents that they needed to be baptized and circumcised.
THE PERVERTED GOSPEL
The perverted Gospel always adds to the simple message that we preach; Death, burial and resurrection plus take this off ,put that on,cant do this cant do that. Now the respondents must jump thru other hoops to be saved. Paul called that a perverted gospel.
Perverted: a : to cause to turn aside or away from what is good or true or morally right : corrupt b : to cause to turn aside or away from what is generally done or accepted : misdirect. When we add to the simplicity of the gospel message we misdirect people that is why Paul wrote that the Galatians were removed from Christ. They had been misdirected. Many of us like the Galatians have been misdirected. We are preaching alot of things in this hour listen closely and you will realize that the Gospel is not even being preached. Preaching is going on, There is a sound however I challenge you the next time you go to church listen to the message. If I don't preach the Death,Cross, Burial ,grave, and resurrection got up with all power I have tickled your ears and proclaimed a perverted message that does not , can not ,and will not save.
8 But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. If you was saved in the Apostolic church when this scripture is quoted the dance is on, why because we rejoiced we knew the true gospel, and we felt superior to those that we assumed did not.Lets look closer We rejoiced that we knew about the baptism in Jesus Name. The Gospel is not baptism. The proper response when one hears the gospel is first Faith and secondly obedience.
Mark 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved ; but he that believeth not shall be damned He that believeth {Faith} and is baptised {obedience} When you read Acts 2 Peter did not preach baptism, He did not preach clothing, he did not preach a movement . He preached Jesus. I challenge you to read the entire chapter of Acts 2 Peter proclaimed the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus, He enlarges on that base when he proclaims David our father...through Prophecy {This is that}verses 16-22 through History verses 25-36 The subject of his message is Jesus death burial and resurrection. when the people heard the Gospel their heart was pricked and They asked men and bretheren what shall we do? For years I was giving an answer to a question the people were not asking. Many of us today are preaching the baptism instead of the gospel. The gospel is what saves and convicts men and women.
16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth ; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. 17 For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written , The just shall live by faith.Romans 1:16-17 As I pointed out early in the text Paul defined the Gospel as death burial and resurrection according to the scriptures. He proclaims here in Romans that the Gospel is the Power of God unto Salvation.
Our preaching can condemn if we are not discerning who we are preaching to. Most preachers just get up and preach because you are used to preaching to church folks all your messages are directed to church folks. Look at your congregation if you have sinners they need to hear the gospel. Many times we are preaching church messages to church folks and we wonder why we are not drawing or winning the lost. You are not preaching what the lost need to hear. The world needs to hear what Jesus told us to preach The Gospel.
Discerning and winning
If we are going to win souls lets follow the pattern of Jesus. In John 4:8-15 Jesus is at the well and this woman comes to draw, Jesus engaged her in conversation he spoke to her where she was at a well in search of water. Jesus knew her real thirst was for love {married five times} and God { John 4:20} she was curious about worship. and Jesus sits there and talks about water, Why? because that's where she was at. We try to change folks instead of letting them be where they are. The gospel changes not doctrine; doctrine alone kills the sinner. In Acts 2:42 they continued in doctrine after they heard the gospel, not before. The gospel is a message of hope that's why its called the good news. notice in verse 28 the woman left her waterpot. it was never about water it was about her having a God encounter with Christ, come and see a man. She became a witness "come and see a man" her witness won a city. She did not try to indoctrinate anyone she simply proclaimed Jesus. In Acts 17:22 Paul on Mars hill proclaimed Jesus as the unkown . In his proclamation he declared the death burial and resurrection. V: 31 The gospel is the message we proclaim Death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jesus commissioned us to proclaim the death burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Preaching Holiness to a sinner is futile
In Isaiah 6:1-5 it tell of Isaiah seeing the Lord in all of his holiness and the result was condemnation V5 woe is me Im undone, Im unclean and my people unclean. When he looked at himself compared to the holiness of God he cried. The grace of God purged his sin with a hot coal and he was able to hear and see the rest of what God wanted to reveal to him. The gospel is the coal when we hear the gospel it has the power to purge our uncleanness. When we preach holiness to a sinner we are preaching a standard that in his present state without the intervention of God will never attain. The Gospel is the good news that God intervened through death burial and resurrection of Jesus. That is the coal for the alter and Whosoever will believe can have eternal life. that is good news. to the Addict ,prostitute, banker or school teacher. No matter how undone you are Jesus loves you and he loves you soo much that even when you was at your lowest point in sin and degradation He died
7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die : yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die . 8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us Romans 5:7-8 The next time sinners are in your midst try preaching the good news to them they just may come back! The gospel transcends culture, no matter who you are or where you are in the world the gospel is the same. If people have to import equipment to conform to you message you are not preaching the gospel.
