REMEMBER THE JEW!
Are you boasting of privileges that you have when you should be thanking God for them? Are these same privileges causing you to feel superior to others?
Let's examine some of the privileges that the Jews had experienced and see what happens when you take that which God endows and do not use it as He intends.
Romans 2:17-20 says - "Behold, thou art called a Jew, and restest in the law, and makest thy boast of God, And knowest His will, and approvest the things that are more excellent, being instructed out of the law; And art confident that thou thyself art a guide of the blind, a light of them which are in darkness, An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes, which hast the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law."
To be called a "Jew" was a great honor. It was indeed a noble title and still is. This race of people were called the children of Israel until the time of Rehoboam when the twelve tribes were divided into ten and two tribes. Ten tribes - under the title of "Israel" - eventually went into captivity - leaving Judah and Benjamin. The name "Jews" was then given to denote those of the tribe of Judah - which is the tribe from which the Messiah emerged.
These people "rested in the law." What that means is that they trusted to it...leaned upon it...and relied on it for acceptance and favor. They reposed their entire confidence in it. They took great pride in having it among them - using it as a means to distinguish them from others and elevate them above others. They considered the knowledge of the Law as being a safety for them rather than a duty. This was their mistake!
They "made their boast of God." The Jews had a bare external knowledge of the one true God. They were His covenant people. He declared Himself to be their God and them - His people. They boasted in the fact that they had His favor. The other nations were all in darkness but here were a chosen people who knew this God. Hence, they felt far elevated above others.
The Jews "knew His will" - as revealed in the Old Testament Scriptures. This knowledge included the commands of God. Because they had a knowledge of His truth and will, they were able to easily distinguish between good and evil...things which differed from others... and to separate between the precious and the vile. They understood what was conformable to the will of God and what was not.
They "approved things that are more excellent." The basis for their critical discrimination was that they were a privileged people who were "instructed out of the law" and had the "form of knowledge and of the truth in the law."
With this kind of background, it is easy to see how God would call upon them to be "a guide of the blind"..."a light of them which are in darkness"..."an instructor of the foolish"...and "a teacher of babes."
All of these privileges for the Jews resulted in a position of influence and responsibility - not for self-aggrandizement or selfish exclusion - but for the purpose of communicating the Divine Will unto others.
The Jews set themselves as the head of humanity - yet they were notoriously no better than the other nations in moral conduct. Because they considered themselves as the favorites of Heaven, they believed that God would be especially tolerant of their vices. Nothing could be further than the truth!
What is Holy Spirit attempting to teach you through this message?
As a Christian, you are endowed with special gifts and privileges that - if you are not careful - can cause you to feel superior to others less endowed. You may even be guilty - at times - of looking down on others who do not have the knowledge, grace, privileges, or opportunities that you enjoy.
God's gifts and privileges are given so that you would be a blessing unto others. They are not for your own self-aggrandizement.
The question is not whether or not you are blessed, the question is - what are you doing with your blessing?
Don't scorn "the blind"..."those who are in darkness"..."the foolish"...or "the babes." Just be sure to take what you know of the Living God and be "a guide"..."a light"..."an instructor"... and "a teacher" for them.
And be sure to always thank the Lord for your many privileges. Let Him hear words of gratitude coming forth from your mouth rather than words of boasting.
Privileges come with responsibilites.
Don't ever forget that!
