I thought that would get your attention.
A professor in seminary said those words along with these, "All things in the bible are not true but all truth is in the bible."
What do you think of that statement?

RevZ,

Exposition must be given for that statement for me to comment correctly.
It is self explanatory It means exactly what it says.
"All things in the bible are not true but all truth is in the bible."
RevZ,

He has to define and give examples so that I can expound in detail.
I would take it that the professor (though I cannot speak for him) is trying to say that there may be some discrepancies (especially considering translations from the original Hebrew) and erroneous pieces that have been added during translation that may not hold water. However, the foundation of all truth is within the Word.

By example, the wisdom of the Proverbs is true and timeless, even if a name may have been misspelled.

Another way to put it is content versus particulars. I am an African American. This is true. Some would argue however, that I'm a negro, or a Moor, or something else. The same principle of being a person with African heritage and darker skin exists though the statement's presentation is different.

By saying that all truth is in the Bible, he is speaking of the principles being all true, but that there may be some discrepancies in some of the specific accounts.
Kelvin,

Oh ok. Yes, there are discrepancies within the scripture, both from the Hebrew & Greek translations to the English language. But, these errors are not anything, as some may think, that would would make a person doubt their faith in what the bible says. I think discovering truth from non-truth goes beyond looking at errors within the scriptures.

The facts are there that the bible does contain certain mythical stories. These mythical stories, instead of knocking down the bible, actually lifts up Israelite theology. Most Christians would cringe at this fact, but careful explanation would only enhance their understanding of the scriptures, and Hebrew thought, for Hebrew thought is what all followers of Jesus should work to get into.
Moreh this is actually not about errors or discrepancies, it actually speaks to the literalist.
It also is why serious and deep study is required. The average Christian wants to overlook the influences on the Hebrew, as well as the fact the some things were not written for us.

Exo 21:7 And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do.

We no longer sell our children when we are in financial trouble.
Everything in the bible is not true but all truth is in the bible.
That is neither and error of discrepancy. But it is no longer true.
That of course is but one example, and befuddles some one who is a literalist about scripture.
You got the idea.
