HATE IN THE BIBLE(LESS) BELT

The level, tenor, and tone of rhetoric that has been leveled toward the President of late is alarming. What is more alarming is from who and where it is coming from, evangelicals in the historically dubbed 'bible-belt' states. For society, I have little to no expectations for a civil discussion, cordial respect, nor am I surprised by the venom that the world is capable of producing. As a Christian, I am greatly disturb when those who make profession of faith in the life-giver King, Jesus the… Continue

RELEVANT CHURCH & COMMUNITY

So you say that you are anointed. Your ministry is relevant. Really? If that's the case then you will agree that God's hand on US, changes the hearts and lives of OTHERS. “The king gave all that he asked, for God's hand was on Ezra” (Ezra 7:6).

The African American church, and community, must change our understanding and attitude about what it means to change lives, by re-evaluating our impact. There is an old proverb that says,"if you give a man a fish you feed him for a day, but if… Continue

RACIAL PROFILING

So let me see if I got this straight --

World renowned Harvard professor and best-selling author Henry Louis Gates, Jr. comes home from a trip abroad to communist China where he was filming a video about America. His driver brings him to his home in Cambridge Massachusetts, and he notices his front door is jammed or otherwise locked. He cannot get in. He goes around back (as all of us would) and finds a way into his home. A concerned neighbor calls the police and the police show up.… Continue

THE CONTENT OF BIBLICAL PREACHING

My favorite chapter in T. David Gordon’s 'Why Johnny Can’t Preach' is Chapter 4: "A Few Thoughts About Content." After wrestling with the nature of preaching for 25 years, Gordon has concluded that the content of Christian preaching should be the person, character, and work of Christ. Kind of makes sense. Of course, preaching will included moral exhortation, but it is never appropriate, says Gordon, “for one word of moral counsel ever to proceed from a Christian pulpit that is not… Continue

I LOVE TWITTER!

Latest in i.m. tech has burst on the scene and its called twitter! I love it. Though it has its drawbacks, twitter allows us to post scriptures, and simple messages and thoughts for the benefit of others to read. I would like to encourage every minister to do two things: 1) Join twitter and connect with me the site. My profile name is 'zion1906'. 2) Establish your own account and as you feel led, share your thoughts, ecouragements, exhortations, and prayers with others.

The E.K. Bailey Expository Preaching Conference!

This week I attended the best preaching conference south of the Mississippi. Joel C. Gregory, Maurice Watson, J. Alfred Smith, Robert Smith, James Earl Massey, Freddy Haynes, A.L. Patterson, H.B. Charles, Jr., and of course, my pastor Ralph D. West, Sr. The theme this year was 'Preaching That Builds People'.

Since the passing of Dr. Bailey several years ago, the future of the conference was some what uncertain. This year marked the revival of the conference and a new direction as… Continue

MOVING FROM ROMANS 1-11 TO 12-15

A British newspaper conducted a study of the 10 major cities in North America to discover and rank the most "gospel impacted" cities. According to the study results, DFW (Dallas/Ft. Worth) is ranked #1 as the metroplex with the most openly professing, "gospel impacted" people. However, they conducted an additional study on the most 'Transformed' cities as a result of the gospel, and DFW came in last. In other words, DFW is a metroplex that has been impacted by the gospel, and let me qualify… Continue

What Do You Expect?

A young man was venting on his frustration with the music industry. Since the passing of MJ and the world wide, world wind, media frinzy that has followed, the one good thing that has come about is people, many for the first time, are paying attention to the discipline, skill, preparation, respect, investment, study, etc. of the overall art of music making and performing; and they are doing it against the contemporary artist (its about time.) More and more people are realizing that T-Pain is… Continue

The Opportunity in Iran

As the world watches the unfolding events in Iran, I can't help but think about the opportunity to share the gospel. With so many distractions within the African American church (titles, personal prosperity, etc.) It is my prayer that the Lord would remind us of the importance of missions, both domestic and abroad. The fundamental purpose of the church is to save souls. I would like to challenge all pastors to search out credible missions agencies and begin to support them in a financial… Continue

Celebrating The Life of Pastor C. B. T. Smith

On yesterday, the earthly remains of Pastor Clarence Booker T. Smith was laid to rest. Pastor Smith was a giant among his peers and his ministry and preaching transcended generational lines. Pastor Smith was the respected and accomplished pastor of the Golden Gate Missionary Baptist Church for over 52 years. He was graduate of Bishop College, a pulpiteer, a statesman, but most of all he was a guilty peacher. If you haven't had the privilege of hearing this awesome man of God preach I would… Continue

So Have You Heard Any Great Gospel Music Lately?

Something is has gone wrong within the African American Gospel Music arena. Let me preface my comments by saying that I love gospel music. At present my favorite artist/group is Israel & New Breed. I also enjoy gospel music across lines of color. What is my present concern? The lack of Christocentric focus, vague and inconsistent lyrical content, and arrangements that do not help to usher my mind and soul into a state of worship.

I love worship music that causes all who are… Continue

What Ever Happened to Community?

Last night I watch the movie 'Defiance.' It is the true story about Russian Jews who were forced to live in the forest for almost three years during WWII. In it, one of the encampment members brings to the attention of the camps leader the importance of community; that inspite of the circumstances around them, their survival depended on more than just out living the war, but they must also maintain a sense of community, order, structure, respect, traditions such a Holy matrimony, and religious… Continue

The Call for Great Preaching

What makes for good preaching? Serious preachers want to know. In a season where homiletical gimmickry is welcomed, and topical sermons are now the norm, healthy, sound preaching is both wanted and needed now more than ever.

If the preaching clergyman insist on being effective then the following elements must be exercised in the sermonic preparation and experience:

1. Clarity - The message must be clear from the introduction to the conclusion. If the text that you have… Continue
