But what is your take on what would have happened if the prodigal son or anyone who had received salvation backslides by rejecting the Father, His Son, the Holy Ghost and totally turned away from the faith and DIED without having repented or had the opportunity to return to the fold. Would that person be heading for hell or heaven? This is a conversation that came up with a couple of my work colleague when we were in an after discussion on Luke 15:11-32 so I would be interested in having a discussion and receiving everyone's point of view.

ABSOLUTELY!!!!!!
By the knowledge of the law is sin empowered. We are no longer under the law. There is a sin unto death (eternal damnation) and a sin not unto death. If we break the law, Jesus is our propitiation. And the Bible says he offered the sacrifice once and for all. Our present in the past will be referred to as future; and the sacrifice of Jesus takes care of all that.
"My little children I write unto you that you will not sin, but when you sin there is an advocate"
Yes the sacrifice of Jesus takes care of all sins - "behold the Lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world (all generations - time periods put together).
It is when one rejects that Jesus is the christ after having believed that He is Christ that the one looses his/her salvation.
"How shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation ....after having tasted .."
Shalom
